Summons a whirlwind to fight on your behalf. They are a type of minion.

__TOC__

Description
Performing this ritual causes a whirlwind to form, its composition depending on where it is summoned (There are at least 350 different types, ranging from leaves, to cat fur, to metal fragments, to pure faith, to the good old dust devils). Trying to summon another minion may lead to dust devils you've summoned slipping out of your control and dissipating. Dust devils will join you in combat as they will 'assist', and can also be "order"ed to attack. Doing so will cause you to become involved in the combat as well.

Dust devils reduce the amount of xp you will get from kills, though this may be countered by the ability you will have to kill things tougher and in less time. Dust devils are unable to protect and mediocre at dealing damage, so their use is limited.

The progression of the sizes is:
Tiny, small, average, large, huge, gigantic, colossal, enormous, humongous, and unbelievably large.

Dust devils can be referred to as devils, whirlwinds, summons, minions, or creatures.

Help File
<!-- If something in this "Help File" section needs changing, please also submit an in-game typo-rep, as this section should mirror the MUD's help file -->
This ritual summons a dust devil to follow your orders. It will attack if ordered, though not the servants of gods. It will not protect or defend the priest summoning it. A priest can only control two dust devils at a time. Performing this ritual requires use of a holy symbol consecrated to your deity.

Example
* faith.rituals.misc.area Mocked
* faith.rituals.offensive.area Mocked

Both skills affect the size and hitpoints of dust devils, as well as their offensive abilities. Defensive abilities seem to be constant.

Of.area determines the number of devils you can summon.

Base GP Cost
50/75/100/... GP

The gp cost depends on the number of dust devils or other minions you are already controlling. The base cost is 50 gp (when you're not controlling any other minions already), with an additional 25 gp for every minion you already have.

Forms of dust devils
As the name suggests: most of the time a dust devil will consist of, erm, dust. However, there are at least 350 different forms, and the following list is an attempt to record them - just in case you fancy a specific looking one, go to the location specified (some may be found in various locations. You might have to perform dust devil more than once on that location, as only every 2nd or 3rd performance of this ritual produces a "non-dust" dust devil.

Note: 1) variations of the same dust devil to not seem to count multiple times towards the related achievements. For example creating ten whirlwinds different coloured fluff does not register as creating ten whirlwinds from different materials for the purposes of the achievment. 2) some forms can occur in a fairly big area (i.e. in several places within a big city (e.g. pebbles), others are limited to a specific building or room (e.g. see various forms occuring in Alchemists' Guild, AM).
Miss Aell von Glitz the Swift Assassin of Black Widow House, MA, Assassins' Guild Librarian, Reporter for the AM Daily, Doppleganger.
Her nationality is Uberwaldean and she is from Uberwald.<br>
This quaint, young girl has a strong look about her, despite being only 19 years of age. Her Uberwaldean heritage is obvious, her features traitorously betraying her. Supported by a pale, lithe frame, Aell looks extremely fragile, although it is suspected that there is more to her than meets the eye. She stands a little over 5'6", with piercing grey eyes, and brilliant venetian red hair that dangles tidily around her shoulders - not exactly the best hue for someone of her profession.<br>
Citizen in Ankh-Morpork.<br>

Aell: /* Bestowing */

The faith rods, maces, and flails are carriers for rituals allowing a player (priest or non-priest) to perform rituals they would otherwise not have at their disposition. The services that each item allows the player to request depends on which powers have been infused into them. Note that this system means that wizards, witches and any others not worshipping a god are unable to access the powers contained within the items.
The rods need to be charged by a priest, then have to be consecrated to your God and charged in order to be of use for you. So when requesting a rod, please remember it's a VERY time consuming process!

Rods (includes batons/canes/maces) need to be held to charge or perform the ritual(s) in them. This requires significant faith.item.rod skills - research is limited at present, but it appears that the minimum requirement to guarantee reasonable success in holding a rod is a similar bonus in fa.it.ro as the bonus in the skill(s) required to perform the ritual. This will be much higher if you are using a cane/mace/rod with multiple rituals.

Some good old references
The ancient faith rods and how they used to work.

The very first successful ressurect by a non-Pishite: LaoTzu resses Sined.

Bestowing
You will need deity points, the ritual, and the relevant faith skills to put a ritual on a rod. You will need to find an empty "slot", and bestow the ritual into that slot. You can only put one copy of each ritual into each rod, and when you bestow it you will attempt to perform it normally, but with a success resulting in that ritual becoming imbued. Since bestowing costs DP it cannot be done by excommunicated priests! The different types of rod have affinities that suit some ritual types more than others (see List of Rods). It is much harder to bestow a ritual into a rod if it has a poor affinity for it.

Scouring
If you have a faith rod with a certain ritual, but you want to get rid of the ritual, you have two options: ask a priest of a different god to re-consecrate the rod, or use your scour command. But beware, you might end up with less than you intended to!

Performing
Using "perform <ritual> on <target> [using|from] <rod> " you can perform a ritual from a rod instead of from your mind. It'll still cost gp. If it's more than a one-shot imbue (see below), it'll also cost deity points. If the rod has the ritual, then you will be able to perform as though you had it yourself. You'll still need to be able to actually succeed in performing it, which will be harder than performing the ritual from your mind.

Any follower or priest can perform rituals these ways. Since they use deity points, heretics are again excluded.

Charging up the rod
When you bestow a ritual into a rod, it can only be used once!! So if you perform the ritual, it will dissolve from the rod, leaving an empty slot. It can be made to be used multiple times by pouring guild point into the rod. You can do this by praying whilst holding the rod. If you're holding two rods, or a rod and beads, the gp invested will be split over the items. To be able to charge a rod, you will need to be a priest of the same deity as the rod to do this (use see consecration!). When you charge the rod, you will find that the ritual can be "imbued", "impressed" or "imprinted" into the rod.

This means:

*imbued: ritual can only be used once
*impressed: ritual can be uses multiple times, but the ritual will disappear when you consecrate the rod to another deity
*imprinted: ritual can be used multiple times and it will remain on the rod when reconsecrated
When charging a rod, you'll see these levels of chargement:

#imbued, barely visible light
#imbued, faint light
#imbued, dull light
#imbued, pale light
#imbued, dim light
#imbued, moderate light
#imbued, softly pulsing light
"The <rod name> trembles momentarily as its bond with the ritual <ritual name> is strengthened."
#impressed, softly pulsing light
#impressed, brightly pulsing light
#impressed, bright light
#impressed, strong light
#impressed, brilliant light
#impressed, dazzling light
#impressed, radiant light
"The <rod name> throbs with power as its bond with the ritual <ritual name> is fastened tight."
#imprinted - no light level!

To reach the impressed stage, on a baton with good affinity, takes around 300 times the gp cost of the ritual itself. To imprint a ritual takes around 750 times the gp cost. If you are trying to charge a rod that has a poor affinity for a ritual, it will cost even more gp to charge. Charging rituals on multiple slot rods also takes longer.

Transferring rods between gods
Only followers and priests of the rod's deity can use a rod to cast rituals. But you can consecrate a rod to change its deity, and allow other gods to use the rituals. However, the rituals must be really well-connected (imprinted) to the rod to survive the consecration, else they will leave the rod. When you reconsecrate a rod, all rituals drop to the "imbued" level!! So you have to recharge the rod before being able to use it multiple times!

When a rod changes deity, the new deity takes on the responsibility for paying for the deity point costs.

Linked slots
If you look at the rods, you'll see they have several slots in which you can put rituals. Some are dependent on others. You can only put a ritual in an empty slot which is not dependent on another empty slot. You can also only put rituals in slots which are smaller than the one in their linked slot. Bestowing a ritual on a rod will affect that rods affinity.

If an imbued ritual is performed and leaves the rod, it'll empty all other slots dependent on it too.

Different rods available
There's a wide variety of rods available on the Disc. There are rods with one, two, three or even four slots. The four slot rods are each unique to a certain npc of a God. (List courtesy of Nightcrawler)

;Spiked black pole - Kess of Sek
;Blue lacquered staff - Vy of Fish
;Speckled grey staff - Naefela of Gufnork
;Silver flail - Althea of Pishe
;Tasseled staff - Charisse of Gapp
;Marble sceptre - Hermal of Sandelfon
;Bronzed crook - Very Reverend Khepresh

I'll probably be unable to list them all here, but Nightcrawler was so kind to provide me with this list of rods.

You will see that some rods have colours. Those colours indicate their affinity to certain types of rituals.

Traps your target into a crystal sphere.

__TOC__

Description
Stasis is the targeted version of the holy sanctuary ritual. It places the target into an impenetrable crystal sphere either to protect them from the others in the room, or to provide the performer with a chance to make an escape. Once inside the sphere, the target either has to wait for the sphere to dissolve, or they can attempt to 'shatter' the sphere from the inside. To do this requires enough perception to be able to spot a flaw (not a very high requirement) as well as enough blunt skills and a suitable weapon to be able to shatter the sphere at that flaw. Upon failure the priest is placed inside the sphere instead of the target. Takes a very long time to perform.
This ritual removes the target from your presence by trapping them into a sphere of crystal. You will need a prayer book and a block of incense to perform this ritual.

Example
> perform stasis on Pinkfish
You recite one of the prayers from your prayer book, ending with a call for Gapp to protect you from Pinkfish.
The incense in your hands bursts into flames, filling the air with a thick blue-grey smoke. The smoke is caught up in a
sudden gust and settles around Pinkfish.
You recite a list of Pinkfish's crimes against Sarduk, ending with a frenzied cry for retribution.
The smoke suddenly solidifies into a solid crystal sphere around Pinkfish.

Aell: /* Charging prayer beads */

Purpose
Prayer beads, once charged sufficiently, can be used in rituals instead of holy amulets, holy symbols and holy relics, reducing burden, inventory clutter and complication in performing rituals (you only have to have your beads to hand, not a whole host of holy components). Note that while beads must be held in order to charge them, they do not need to be held while performing rituals that require them - although they must be in your immediately accessible inventory (i.e. not inside a container).

Cost
AM$50 from temple shops.

Also Found
Carried by no-one, although occasionally they can be found (sometimes even ready charged) in player shops. Beware of consecrating prayer beads to another god if they are not newly acquired - any charge in them will be lost. Reconsecrating beads to the same god can be done (to remove a remember, for example - although this is done with the "scour" command these days).

(Custom beads in a wide variety of colours and materials can be bought from an npc in the Temple of Small Gods)

Charging prayer beads
Beads are charged whenever they are held while faith GP is expended - e.g. performing rituals, praying, ritual burying or even using Gapp's low altar.

Newly bought beads are uncharged and can safely be consecrated to your god if none are available in your temple. Note that consecrating beads to another god once charged to any extent will remove any charge that has previously been instilled into the item, they can however be reconsecrated to the same god (to remove a remembered place, for example). The beads can be used by anyone that worships the God that they have been consecrated to, whether they are charged by themselves or another. Once charged, beads do not lose charge unless they are consecrated to another god, and can even be vaulted without losing their charge.

The effects of charged beads are:

*Acting as a substitute for holy symbols, holy amulets, and relics, whilst held or carried in your inventory.
*An increase to wisdom of 1 when the beads are held after being charged to a little over 40% (Partway through 'bright').
*An increase to wisdom of 2 when the beads are held after being charged to 'radiant'.

The beads give off varying degrees of holy auras (which can only be observed by those of the faith) that give an indication as to the amount of guild points that have been instilled within them. The second part of the description is merely a coarser indicator of the same information, with two of the differing levels of auras to each:
It is surrounded by a strong holy aura instilled by the numerous invocations it has been involved in.

Starting from the time at which the first guild points are instilled up to fully charged at 5 million guild points, the progression of auras is as follows:
*pale, flickering
*weakly flickering
*flickering
*unsteady
*faint
*pale
*weak
*steady (holy symbol replacement)
*strong
*bright (holy symbol and amulet replacement; +1 wisdom when held)
*vibrant
*radiant (symbol, amulet and relic replacement; +2 wisdom when held)
*brilliant
*dazzling
*blazing
*blinding

These holy auras are not evenly spaced in terms of guild points needed to obtain each successive aura, being more exponential in nature. The diagram below gives some idea as to the scale involved (The listed auras being at the start of their respective ranges).

<br>
<br>(Diagram made by Warrax)<br>

As a rough guide, at 4 guild point per heartbeat regen the process of charging to 'radiant' takes roughly 21 hours, depending on lag, if all guild points are instilled into the beads. At the more normal 3 guild point regen this figure is closer to 28 hours.

Moving and clicking
One or more beads on prayer beads can also be "move"d or "click"ed around. This appears to involve a faith.rituals.special check but seems purely aesthetic with no functional use beyond counting prayers. Unholding the beads will reset the count.

> click bead on latent beads
You move one bead around the set of worn onyx prayer beads with a fumbling motion of your fingers
and a tremulous click.
There are two stages in faith rods that use DP:

*Bestowing: Bestowing a ritual onto a rod will cost DP. Hence it's possible that sometimes you will be unable to bestow.
*Performing from a permanent rod: Perform a ritual from an impressed or imprinted rod will cost DP. So make sure you don't become to dependant on it! You might find yourself without rituals at awkward times!

Obsecrate
High Priests have a special command called obsecrate. With this command they can ask the deity to alter various things about the way deity points are spent. You can get rough details on the current setup with the Devout Inquisition ritual.

The things they can currently do are:

:Reduce ritual costs - up to 30% of ritual costs can be set to be shouldered by the deity point pool.
:Increase ritual costs by taking tithes - rituals can be made to cost 30% more than usual, with some of the surplus being put back in the deity point pool. This is a more efficient way of converting gp to dp than praying.
:Make rituals easier and better - self-explanatory really, this can chew up a large amount of dp.

As usual, heretics are unaffected by all of this.

Miss Aell von Glitz the Swift Assassin of Black Widow House, MA, Assassins' Guild Librarian, Reporter for the AM Daily, Doppleganger.
Her nationality is Uberwaldean and she is from Uberwald.<br>
This quaint, young girl has a strong look about her, despite being only 18 years of age. Her Uberwaldean heritage is obvious, her features traitorously betraying her. Supported by a pale, lithe frame, Aell looks extremely fragile, although it is suspected by some that there is more to her than meets the eye. She stands a little over 5'9", with piercing emerald green eyes, and brilliant scarlet hair that dangles tidily around her shoulders. It is reported that she idolises a certain Sir Andrew d'Ackerley, but when confronted about this, she hurridly changes the topic.<br>
Citizen in Ankh-Morpork.<br>
Aell von Glitz is the cousin of Teodor; niece of Niccolo and Paff; stepsister of Gamble; ward of Taiki; lover of Percussor and granddaughter of Geryon.<br>
Dull grey baton (1 slot)
This is a short wooden baton, the length of which is covered with ordered and angular religious etchings. While the baton itself has been painted
a dull grey colour, the etchings make a half-hearted attempt to add a little colour with a pale grey hue.
It looks like it could hold one ritual in its etchings.
The etchings are imprinted with the ritual holy sacrifice and are not dependent on any other part of the dull grey baton.
Wooden baton (1 slot)
This is a short wooden baton, the length of which is covered with abstract
and varied religious etchings. While the baton itself has been left
uncoloured, settling instead for a smooth glossy varnish, the etchings have
been made to stand out with a plain red hue.
Serrated baton (1 slot)
This is a short wooden baton, the length of which is covered with spikey,
angry-looking religious etchings. The baton has been dyed black, and has
small notches carved along its length to give it the look and feel of a
crude hand saw.
Pure white baton (1 slot)
This is a short wooden baton, the length of which is covered with gentle,
swirling religious etchings. While the baton itself has been painted a
purest white, the etchings have been made to stand out with a subtle silver
hue.
Purple baton (1 slot)
This is a short wooden baton, the length of which is covered with harsh,
scrawled religious etchings. While the baton itself has been painted a
purple colour, the etchings have been made to stand out with a rich golden
This is a short wooden baton, the length of which is covered with wispy and
disconnected religious etchings. While the baton itself has been painted a
pale yellow colour, the etchings have been made to stand out with a richer
yellow hue.
religious etchings. It has been carved from a single piece of coral,
presumably dredged from the clutches of some unsuspecting reef.
This is a priest's cane. It is a short length of wood, which curls at one end into a gentle circular hook. It is unpainted and left totally bare of any
decoration, but has given a smooth finish.
It looks like it could hold two rituals in its hook and handle.
The hook is imbued with the ritual rage and is linked to the handle. It glows with a barely visible light.
Aquamarine rod (3 slots)
This rod has been made of sturdy wood and painted aquamarine. It has an strange air of nautical piety about it, but is otherwise unremarkable.
The tip is empty and is linked to the shaft.
The base is empty and is linked to the shaft.
The shaft is empty and is not dependent on any other part of the aquamarine rod.

Dark blue mace (3 slots)
This is a hefty mace. The shaft has been stained with a dark blue ink and wrapped in
similarly-covered leathers, and the business end of the mace is a lump of dull iron.

Jet Black Rod (3 slots)
(Good affinity for offensive rituals)

Four slot rods
Bronzed crook (4 slots)
This slightly-gnarled crook has an unpleasant sense of malign disapproval
about it. While its shaft is a rather unremarkable length of wood, its head
is an unusually abrupt and flat hook which looks, from some angles, rather
like a beak. It has been coated in gleaming bronze, and an impressive
collection of huge, grey and white feathers splay out and dangle from where
it connects to the rest of the crook.
It looks like it could hold four rituals in its base, shaft, feathers and
hook.
The base is empty and is linked to the shaft.
The shaft is empty and is not dependent on any other part of the bronzed
crook.
The hook is empty and is linked to the feathers.
It is in excellent condition.

Tasseled staff (4 slots)
This rather cheery priest's staff is something of a colourful affair.
Although the plain wooden shaft is not particularly noteworthy, a majestic
bronze emblem gleams from atop of it, with several silk tassels, each dyed a
different vibrant colour, dangling from its extremities.
It looks like it could hold four rituals in its base, emblem, shaft and
tassels.
The base is empty and is linked to the shaft.
The emblem is empty and is linked to the shaft.
The shaft is empty and is not dependent on any other part of the tasseled
staff.
The tassels are empty and are linked to the emblem.
It is in excellent condition.

Blue lacquered staff (4 slots)
The length of this staff has been finished with a rich blue lacquer, whose
tones vary from a glimmering turquoise down to a rich, deep azure. At the
top of the staff, an oversized copper fishing hook has been fixed. While
the staff is obviously impractical for actually catching any fish with, the
hook nevertheless has a viciously sharp point.
It looks like it could hold four rituals in its base, shaft, point and hook.
The base is empty and is linked to the shaft.
The shaft is empty and is not dependent on any other part of the blue
lacquered staff.
The hook is empty and is linked to the shaft.
It is in excellent condition.

Marble sceptre (4 slots)
This remarkably weighty sceptre is not your usual gaudy jewel-encrusted
monstrosity. Its shaft is simply a staff of solid oak, and its orb is a
skull-crushingly heavy sphere of marble, all swirling greys and smoothed to
perfection. About a foot's length of shaft beneath the orb has been
meticulously wrapped with red tape, adding a splash of colour to an
otherwise sombre affair.
It looks like it could hold four rituals in its base, tape, orb and shaft.
The base is empty and is linked to the shaft.
The tape is empty and is linked to the shaft.
The orb is empty and is linked to the tape.
sceptre.
It is in excellent condition.

Spiked black pole (4 slots)
As poles go, this one is pretty threatening. Its blackened metal length is
adorned with painful-looking ridges, making it difficult to hold
comfortably. Above a modest circlet of iron spikes, the pole is topped by a
seven-sided emblem, each point of which is decorated with a
finely-metalworked hand and a far cruder metal point, jutting away from the
centre of the sigil.
This rather unusual staff has been painted a very pale grey, with flecks of
slightly darker grey paint speckled along its length. At its top, three
heavy brass rings have been set through the centre of the shaft, so that
they clank against it and each other as the staff moves. A strange emblem,
with metalwork vaguely resembling cloud formations, crowns the deal, giving
it a suitably mystical air.

While the baton itself has been left
angry-looking religious etchings. The baton has been dyed black, and has
crude hand saw.
disconnected religious etchings. While the baton itself has been painted a
This is a short baton, the length of which is covered with roughly-carved
religious etchings. It has been carved from a single piece of coral,
presumably dredged from the clutches of some unsuspecting reef.
The etchings are empty and are not dependent on any other part of the coral

Four slot rods
Bronzed crook (4 slots)
This slightly-gnarled crook has an unpleasant sense of malign disapproval
about it. While its shaft is a rather unremarkable length of wood, its head
is an unusually abrupt and flat hook which looks, from some angles, rather
like a beak. It has been coated in gleaming bronze, and an impressive
collection of huge, grey and white feathers splay out and dangle from where
it connects to the rest of the crook.
It looks like it could hold four rituals in its base, shaft, feathers and
hook.

It looks like it could hold four rituals in its base, emblem, shaft and
tassels.

The base is empty and is linked to the shaft.

It looks like it could hold four rituals in its base, spikes, emblem and
shaft.
black pole.
It is in excellent condition.

Speckled grey staff (4 slots)
This rather unusual staff has been painted a very pale grey, with flecks of
slightly darker grey paint speckled along its length. At its top, three
heavy brass rings have been set through the centre of the shaft, so that
they clank against it and each other as the staff moves. A strange emblem,
with metalwork vaguely resembling cloud formations, crowns the deal, giving
it a suitably mystical air.
It looks like it could hold four rituals in its base, emblem, shaft and
rings.
grey staff.
It is in excellent condition.

Silver Flail (4 slots)
(Bad affinity for offensive rituals)
This weapon is comprised of a hefty shaft of wood, one end of which is connected via chains to three
large and polished silver balls. The other end of the shaft is wrapped in strips of leather to
allow its wielder to better grip onto it.
