Something ain't right about it, my hatian priest alt had 80 levels of faith.rituals.defensive.target and didn't get the ritual..
So either the info is plain wrong to start with, I find that unlikly thou, it could be dated as the game changes all the time, or it could be right and there's a but in the game.. I belive that it's the most likly that option two is correct, so it would be nice if somone could figure out what level IS required to get the ritual. Sounds like you're the perfect person to do the research yourself! It's not that hard: try advancing fa.ri.de.se a bit further (one level at a time, leave and re-enter the vestry after each level) to see if that one has impact; once that one is at the same level as fa.ri.de.ta, try advancing both a bit until you gain the ritual. :I'm a Hat priest, and I just did what LaoTzu suggested. I had 105 levels of faith.rituals.defensive.self and about 75 levels of faith.rituals.defensive.target before I started. I advanced faith.rituals.defensive.target one level at a time, going in and out in between, and the instructor finally taught me major shield once I had 101 levels of faith.rituals.defensive.target. :Sek priest first raised faith.rituals.defensive.self until faith.rituals.defensive was 79 (with 43 faith.rituals.defense.area and 50ish faith.rituals.defense.target), but did not get the ritual. :Gufnork priest. Had .se at 105 and .ar at 60 learned when advancing .ta from 78 to 79. It appears that Major shield is learned at fa.ri.de.ta 79 and may also require fa.ri.de or fa.ri.de.se to be at a certain level
:oh historical note, major shield originally was not granted to 2 gods, i think pishe or sek from memory, hence the different learn at levels for different gods. -inige

I recently learned the Ritual gufnorkian priest. I pushed Fa.ri.de.ta to 79 and was taught the ritual before then i have 79 in the base of the defense branch through high de.se It would appear for Gufnorkians we learn it at fa.ri.de.ta level 79 [[User:Garran|Garran]] 21:01, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

It seems a couple of the rits now demand that the base level of the skill be raised to the amount noted, as well as, the sub skill.

Example: I got fa.rit.def.tar to 79 and did not get taught the ritual, so I went out and raised my other two skills ( focusing on fa.rit.def.self mostly) until the base skill fa.rit.def hit 79 (fa.rit.def.se was in the low 90's at this time) and I was taught it.

This was tested by slowly gainging exp in the market of oc and running back to raise skills slowly and walking back and forth through the teachers door, so I'm fairly certain this is whats going on.

This also held true for dust devil.</nowiki>

Provides a powerful defensive shield

= Description =
Probably the most used ritual by priests. This ritual covers the target in a protective layer of shielding which soaks up damage. It is effectively a complete covering of armour which weighs nothing. Unfortunately it is not very good against specials, but can soak up a large amount of base round damage at high bonuses. It can also be extended by "stacking". For example, if casting the ritual once leads to a 2 minute duration, casting it 4 times in a row stacks it to an 8 minute duration. The duration of a shield(either major or minor) after a single perform seems to be equal to your bonus, in seconds. (360 bonus -> 6 minutes). It can be extended with [[Minor Shield]], however this will weaken the major shield and is not recommended. It's better to use the stacking method as mentioned. Extending it with another Major Shield performed with greater penalties or fewer bonuses, or by someone with a lower bonus will also weaken it, though it's unknown exactly how much.

You need a shield to perform the ritual. The origami paper shield at 1/9lb is currently the lightest, but there is a penalty from using it in that your major shield will be harder to perform, weaker in strength and shorter in duration. A mounted pewter shield is the next lightest and has the same or similar penalty. A "proper" shield, although heavier (the lightest is a small leather shield, at 2 lbs), does not have the penalty. Other than the effects mentioned here, the type of shield has no effect whatsoever on the ritual.

Each deity has a different appearance of major shield, coming in at least 2 types depending on the strength.

If you have a magical impact shield, that will always absorb hits first, with the major shield only having any effect after it has been destroyed.

Major Shield will place a protective shield around you that acts as a layer of armour against blows. It provides significantly more protection than the [[Minor Shield]] ritual. You'll need a holy symbol consecrated to your god and a shield to perform this ritual.
