= Description =
This ritual will give the priest a single glimpse of the location of the target, now including the exits from the room, which can be very useful. Unlike the crystal balls of old, it does not provide continuing descriptions of the target's actions. If successful, the target is not alerted in any way. It is however resistable, probably with de.se, and a failed attempt will be spotted by the target, though the perpetrator will not be revealed.

Incredibly useful in the pk world, it will not work if the target is hiding and you would not have the necessary perception to see them if you were in the same location.

= Help File =

Longsight gives you a vision of the room where the target is standing. It requires a holy symbol consecrated to your deity to perform.

This is a small, cramped room with a large, roaring fire blazing in the forge on the east wall of
the room. There are various assorted tools of metalwork scattered around the fire and hanging on
the walls, most notably the anvil in the centre of the room. The smithy is obviously very busy as
there is a large, dirty order book lying open on a small desk near the door.
There is one obvious exit: south.

A cash safe is in the wall and a piece of embroidered tartan is hanging on the wall.

= Description =
Holy insight tells you about some of the skills and stats of your target. What it tells you about in any given performing is random, so if you are looking for a specific skill/stat, you may have to perform it several times.

Holy insight will tell you stats and it will tell you bonuses (not levels). If the stats and bonuses are affected at the time by any stat items or stat penalties, then the reading from holy insight will change accordingly.

The bonuses for fighting, covert, faith and magic are overall bonuses. These are the ones shown when you type "skills" on its own. This feature makes these particular data less useful than perhaps desired.

The Holy Insight ritual asks your god for information about a person. You will then be told the person's strength and weaknesses. To perform this ritual you will require a holy symbol consecrated to your god.

Carried by no-one, although occasionally they can be found (sometimes even ready charged) in player shops. Beware of consecrating prayer beads to another god if they are not newly acquired - any charge in them will be lost. Reconsecrating beads to the same god can be done (to remove a remember, for example).

(Custom beads in a wide variety of colours and materials can be bought from an npc in the Temple of Small Gods)

= Charging prayer beads =

Newly bought beads are uncharged and can safely be consecrated to your god if none are available in your temple. Note that consecrating beads to another god once charged to any extent will remove any charge that has previously been instilled into the item, they can however be reconsecrated to the same god (to remove a remembered place, for example). The beads are charged when they are involved in any invocation or prayer - that is, every faith guild point spent while holding the beads is transferred through the beads and adds to its total charge. The beads can be used by anyone that worships the God that they have been consecrated to, whether they are charged by themselves or another.

The effects of charged beads are:

*An increase to wisdom of 2 when the beads are held after being charged to 'radiant'.
*An increase to wisdom of 1 when the beads are held after being charged to a little over 40% (Partway through 'bright').
*Acting as a substitute for holy symbols, holy amulets, and relics, whilst held or carried in your inventory.

The beads give off varying degrees of holy auras (which can only be observed by those of the faith) that give an indication as to the amount of guild points that have been instilled within them. The second part of the description is merely a coarser indicator of the same information, with two of the differing levels of auras to each. The beads do not lose charge when they are vaulted or placed in some container.

Starting from as soon as the first guild points are instilled up to fully charged at 5 million guild points, the progression of auras is as follows:

*pale, flickering

*radiant (symbol, amulet and relic replacement)

These holy auras are not evenly spaced in terms of guild points needed to obtain each successive aura, being more exponential in nature. The diagram below gives some idea as to the scale involved (The listed auras being at the start of their respective ranges).

As a rough guide, at 4 guild point per heartbeat regen the process of charging to 'radiant' takes roughly 21 hours, depending on lag, if all guild points are instilled into the beads. At the more normal 3 guild point regen this figure is closer to 28 hours.

= Moving and clicking =
One or more beads on prayer beads can also be "move"d or "click"ed around. This appears to involve a [[faith.rituals.special]] check but seems purely aesthetic with no functional use beyond counting prayers.

Alignment

To be able to use your abilities given to you by your god, you need to remain within your given alignment. Being near the edge of alignment will make perform rituals harder, and impossible if you are out of alignment. You will also be unable to enter the temple vestry to advance or get back rituals after death if you are out of alignment. The 3 main ways to remain in alignment are pray, the burial commands, and by keeping careful note of what NPCs you kill.

The alignment of the NPC you may be killing can be found in a number of ways. Firstly, the rituals [[See Alignment]] and [[Detect Alignment]] will tell you the alignment of all in the room, or a single NPC respectively. Also, the red-hilted daggers available in the Sandelfon temple shop will tell alignment (if they are significantly different from neutral) in the form of a colored flame when used to attack a target. If you are trying to keep an evil alignment, good things to kill are priests of good alignment, like Althea. Easy pickings for a youngster are small rodents and rabbits on the roads surrounding Ankh-Morpork. To try and keep a good alignment, the best places to kill things are areas such as the Gloomy forest and most places where you get attacked on sight. Easy targets include ravens on the roads and fields outside Ankh-Morpork. Killing atheists in the TOSG is good for every alignment. Please do NOT kill shopkeeper priests, this is most inconvenient and even illegal.

Pray and the burial commands effect your alignment directly. How good they are at moving your alignment is dependent on what skill you have in the faith.rituals.special skill, and can be very efficient at changing the alignment with a good bonus.
Pray seems to be more effective when you are far out of alignment than when you are close, while the burial commands seem to be fairly effective no matter what your alignment is.

Note that the [[Light|light]] ritual can give some indication of alignment for those who do not have the detect alignment ritual. When performed upon the target, they give off a certain light which can give a rough indication of what range they belong to.

*Cyan - More good aligned.
*Green - Only slightly good to neutral.
*Yellow - Neutral to slightly evil.
*Red - More evil aligned.

Faith rods

The faith rods, maces, and flails are carriers for rituals allowing a player (priest or non-priest) to perform rituals they would otherwise not have at their disposition. The services that each item allows the player to request depends on which powers have been infused into them. Note that this system means that wizards, witches and any others not worshipping a god are unable to access the powers contained within the items.
The rods need to be charged by a priest, then have to be consecrated to your God and charged in order to be of use for you. So when requesting a rod, please remember it's a VERY time consuming process!

===Bestowing===

You will need deity points, the ritual, and the relevant faith skills to put a ritual on a rod. You will need to find an empty "slot", and bestow the ritual into that slot. You can only put one copy of each ritual into each rod, and when you bestow it you will attempt to perform it normally, but with a success resulting in that ritual becoming imbued. Since bestowing costs DP it cannot be done by excommunicated priests! The different types of rod have affinities that suit some ritual types more than others. It is much harder to bestow a ritual into a rod if it has a poor affinity for it.

===Scouring===

If you have a faith rod with a certain ritual, but you want to get rid of the ritual, you have two options: ask a priest of a different god to re-consecrate the rod, or use your scour command. But beware, you might end up with less than you intended to!

===Performing===
Using "perform <ritual> on <target> [using|from] <rod> " you can perform a ritual from a rod instead of from your mind. It'll still cost gp. If it's more than a one-shot imbue (see below), it'll also cost deity points. If the rod has the ritual, then you will be able to perform as though you had it yourself. You'll still need to be able to actually succeed in performing it, which will be harder than performing the ritual from your mind.

Any follower or priest can perform rituals these ways. Since they use [[Deity points|deity points]], heretics are again excluded.

===Charging up the rod===
When you bestow a ritual into a rod, it can only be used once!! So if you perform the ritual, it will dissolve from the rod, leaving an empty slot. It can be made to be used multiple times by pouring guild point into the rod. You can do this by praying whilst holding the rod. If you're holding two rods, or a rod and beads, the gp invested will be split over the items. To be able to charge a rod, you will need to be a priest of the same deity as the rod to do this (use see consecration!). When you charge the rod, you will find that the ritual can be "imbued", "impressed" or "imprinted" into the rod.

This means:

*''impressed'': ritual can be uses multiple times, but the ritual will disappear when you consecrate the rod to another deity
*''imprinted'': ritual can be used multiple times and it will remain on the rod when reconsecrated
When charging a rod, you'll see these levels of chargement:

To reach the impressed stage, on a baton with good affinity, takes around 300 times the gp cost of the ritual itself. To imprint a ritual takes around 750 times the gp cost. If you are trying to charge a rod that has a poor affinity for a ritual, it will cost even more gp to charge. Charging rituals on multiple slot rods also takes longer.

===Transferring rods between gods===
Only followers and priests of the rod's deity can use a rod to cast rituals. But you can consecrate a rod to change its deity, and allow other gods to use the rituals. However, the rituals must be really well-connected (imprinted) to the rod to survive the consecration, else they will leave the rod. When you reconsecrate a rod, all rituals drop to the "imbued" level!! So you have to recharge the rod before being able to use it multiple times!

When a rod changes deity, the new deity takes on the responsibility for paying for the deity point costs.

===Linked slots===
If you look at the rods, you'll see they have several slots in which you can put rituals. Some are dependent on others. You can only put a ritual in an empty slot which is not dependent on another empty slot. You can also only put rituals in slots which are smaller than the one in their linked slot. Bestowing a ritual on a rod will affect that rods affinity.

If an imbued ritual is performed and leaves the rod, it'll empty all other slots dependent on it too.

This is a short wooden baton, the length of which is covered with ordered and angular religious etchings. While the baton itself has been painted
a dull grey colour, the etchings make a half-hearted attempt to add a little colour with a pale grey hue.
It looks like it could hold one ritual in its etchings.
The etchings are empty and are not dependent on any other part of the dull grey baton.
It is in excellent condition.

===Wooden baton (1 slot)===
This is a short wooden baton, the length of which is covered with abstract
and varied religious etchings. While the baton itself has been left
uncoloured, settling instead for a smooth glossy varnish, the etchings have
been made to stand out with a plain red hue.
It looks like it could hold one ritual in its etchings.
The etchings are empty and are not dependent on any other part of the wooden
baton.
It is in excellent condition.

This is a short wooden baton, the length of which is covered with spikey,
angry-looking religious etchings. The baton has been dyed black, and has
small notches carved along its length to give it the look and feel of a
crude hand saw.

swirling religious etchings. While the baton itself has been painted a
purest white, the etchings have been made to stand out with a subtle silver

white baton.

Welcome to the Priests Guild. This is a little guide based on the most common questions that get asked (to do with the guild that is, not 'can you ward this?', 'can you res me?' or 'can you passage me?'). If you have a common question you get asked which isn't here, feel free to add it to this page!

= How do I join the Priests guild? =
So, you've decided to join the Priests Guild. A most excellent choice...

Basically, first you need to worship a god. Which [[Gods|god(s)]] you can worship will depend on your [[alignment]], as you have to be in a god's alignment before you can worship them. You can set a basic alignment in the Newbie Area at the Priest's. There is a fountain (representing [[Pishe]]) with some beetles floating in it. Either by rescuing or drowning beetles you can set your alignment. Around 15 drowned beetles will make you very evil and suitable for [[Sek]] or you can get very good by rescuing 15 beetles and [[Pishe]] will take you in her loving arms. Affecting your alignment by killing NPCs of the opposite alignment is -especially for a newbie- a very long and hard process.

Once you have decided which god to worship, you need to find their temple, either use an urchin, or take a look at the excellent Discworld [http://kefka.purplesunset.co.uk/ maps]. Once in the temple, you must find the god's high altar and 'join' the priests guild. Congratulations, you are now a priest of the deity of your choice! Time to advance skills, learn rituals at the room with the religious instructor and become a famous priest!

= Can you give me any starting tips and info? =
Your primary skills are those of the [[skills|faith tree]], though the fighting skill tree is important to many priests who want to advance at a reasonable pace.

As you advance your faith skills, you will get a number of rituals. To see what rituals you have, type 'rituals'. There is a help file for each of the rituals, simply type 'help <ritual>', e.g. 'help cure light wounds' and note you can also look up information on each of the rituals on the [[:Category:Rituals|rituals page]].

To use the rituals, you use the command 'perform', e.g. 'perform cure light wounds on me', for more help type 'syntax perform'. That is however fairly long to type so most priests use aliases for rituals, type 'help alias' for a detailed explanation on what they are, but as an example, typing 'alias cl perform cure light wounds on $*$' will set up an alias where if you type 'cl me' or ‘cl valkyr’ it will work the same as the example of performing the ritual. For more details and extra functionalities (such as standard arguments), read the helpfile.

= How should I rearrange my stats? =
This is not something to rush into quickly. Make sure you have read "help rearrange" and "help stats" before you attempt this, as well as asking other players from the same deity for advice. There is no such a thing as the best rearrange for a priest anymore. A rearrange for a Sekkite who wishes to go PK will strongly differ from a rearrange for a Pishite who only wishes to restore and resurrect people.

I would advice you to answer the following questions for yourself, before considering a rearrange:
* Which [[:Category:Rituals|rituals]] do I want to be good at and what skills do they use? (For example, dust devil (*.area) and major shield (de.se) and maybe blight (of.ta))
* How important is fighting for me, and which fighting skills will I focus on? (Ex. Sword and parry; Mace and block; dagger and dodge)
* Do I have any other expectations? (Ex. I want a high perception bonus)
* Now that I have selected a couple of important skills, to what stats do they relate? (examine the [[Skills|skills-stats dependencies]])

Now that you have determined which stats are most important for you, you should experiment on [http://bonuses.darkmud.co.uk/ Acim’s bonus generator] with some different rearranges (what happens if I move one point from dex to int?) and pick the one you like best. Note that your stats also affect the rate at which your gp regenerate, and this can be calulated at the same site. Can you really afford that fighting heavy rearrange if it only gives 2 gp back every heartbeat? Do you want the maximum possible 4 gp regeneration and lose out on skills elsewhere?

There! You have now rearranged! Normally you are stuck with this rearrange for the rest of your character’s life. If you would happen to feel the need to make a minor adjustment (one stat point at a time), you should consider visiting one of the Retrophrenologists located in most large cities.

= How do I advance my skills? =
You can advance your skills in the worshipper area of your temple, also called the vestry. Type ‘info’, or ‘cost faith’ to see what you can advance in your primaries, what you currently have in those skills, and the experience cost to move up one level. You can also type 'cost faith to 50' for example, to see the xp cost of getting your overall faith to 50 from where you are now.

To advance, you can type 'advance faith' or you can advance the subskills by using 'advance faith.rituals.defensive.self', note that you can use the first two letters as a shortcut, ie 'advance fa.ri.de.se' or ‘advance fa.ri.de.se to 100’ or advance fa.ri.de.se by 10’.
You can also advance a little of the other skill trees, try typing 'cost fighting', 'cost other' and so on.

= What should I advance? =
To start with, you will need to advance overall faith (at least up to level 5, when you can advance faith.rituals, then you need 10 faith.rituals to be able to advance faith.rituals.defensive etc.) This can only be done up to level 50 however, at which point you have no choice but to advance the individual subskills shown in the list. In reality, no-one actually advances faith to 50, as you can get going better by advancing the subskills for the rituals you want instead.

As to what particular skills you should advance after or even before this, my advice is to look at what rituals you can get on the [[Gods|gods page]], or look on the [[:Category:Rituals|rituals page]] to see which you would like to be able to use, then advance the subskill that the rituals you want use.

Note you should try and learn some fighting as quickly as possible, firstly the 10 levels available in the guild, then more off other players. The best practice is to take the fighting exercises in the newbie area. With any luck you can get your blunt, sharp, pierce, parry and dodge to level 5 without any cost!

Also recommended is advancing your other.health in the guild to get more hit points. The 500 or so you start out with can disappear all too quick! The guild will let you advance this skill to level 25.

= How can I get money and experience, I can't even kill a cockroach! =
First of all don't rush through the newbie area too quickly. I know you are desperate to get into the action but completing all of the guild tasks will equip you with a nice set of basic skills. And don't despair, these are super cockroaches, really, they are, but with your skills from Pumpkin Town everything will get a bit easier. Those skills are cheap there and out on the Disc you have to pay for them with money and XP (eXperience Points).

You must understand that the priests guild is not the most easy guild to start a character off in. We are one of the few unlucky guilds that have no primary skills capable of doing direct damage to an opponent, instead we have to rely on the non-primary fighting skills. The 10 levels of fighting you can learn in the priests guild are probably not going to be enough to start killing anything beyond small rodents; you are going to need to learn more off another player. This is now fairly expensive to do, so you will need to earn some experience.

Without fighting you can get experience by idling and performing rituals. Once you have learnt a bit of fighting (I would recommend to concentrate on one weapon type at first) then you will be able to go out and smite mightily. At this stage, the only rituals which will be a great deal of help to you will be cure light wounds, dust devil and minor shield.

Now that you can get money and experience by killing things, you can go on your merry way, using this to learn more fighting to kill tougher things, or learning faith to get some of the more powerful rituals going (especially [[Major Shield|major shield]]).

= Why does it say my God's attention is elsewhere? =
Performing a ritual is an attempt to get your God(dess) to use some of His/Her power to aid you in something. How convincing you are in your attempt to get your God to do this for you depends on your bonus in the faith skills relevant to that particular ritual. If your God's attention is elsewhere, this means you did not have sufficient faith to convince your God to help you, and that His/Her attention turned to other things (drinking, eating, plotting…). You will need to increase your skills in the future in order to increase your chance to succeed your ritual.

= Pray and the burial commands don't seem to do anything, what do they have to do with alignment? =
Basically, they will move your alignment back into favour with your god, but how effective they are at it does depend on your faith.rituals.special bonus. Check the alignment section for more details.

= What is a square stone/ivory statue/black medallion etc. and what does it do? =
These are upgraded versions of the holy symbols which are used in some rituals and are readily available in the temple shops. Any ritual that requires a holy symbol to perform can be performed with one of these as a substitute. Each god has a different one, but you can use another god’s if you first consecrate it at your high altar, which can be handy so that you can wear your holy symbol by consecrating a black medallion (for Sek) instead of carrying it in your inventory. Another possible substitute, for every god, are charged prayer beads. They can replace a symbol, an amulet and a relic, all at the same time.

Although the plain wooden shaft is not particularly noteworthy, a majestic
bronze emblem gleams from atop of it, with several silk tassels, each dyed a

top of the staff, an oversized copper fishing hook has been fixed. While
the staff is obviously impractical for actually catching any fish with, the
hook nevertheless has a viciously sharp point.

This remarkably weighty sceptre is not your usual gaudy jewel-encrusted
monstrosity. Its shaft is simply a staff of solid oak, and its orb is a
skull-crushingly heavy sphere of marble, all swirling greys and smoothed to
perfection. About a foot's length of shaft beneath the orb has been
meticulously wrapped with red tape, adding a splash of colour to an
otherwise sombre affair.

As poles go, this one is pretty threatening. Its blackened metal length is
adorned with painful-looking ridges, making it difficult to hold
comfortably. Above a modest circlet of iron spikes, the pole is topped by a
seven-sided emblem, each point of which is decorated with a
finely-metalworked hand and a far cruder metal point, jutting away from the
centre of the sigil.

they clank against it and each other as the staff moves. A strange emblem,
with metalwork vaguely resembling cloud formations, crowns the deal, giving
it a suitably mystical air.
