-----Requirement to get the ritual-----
Something ain't right about it, my hatian priest alt had 80 levels of faith.rituals.defensive.target and didn't get the ritual..
So either the info is plain wrong to start with, I find that unlikly thou, it could be dated as the game changes all the time, or it could be right and there's a but in the game.. I belive that it's the most likly that option two is correct, so it would be nice if somone could figure out what level IS required to get the ritual. Sounds like you're the perfect person to do the research yourself! It's not that hard: try advancing fa.ri.de.se a bit further (one level at a time, leave and re-enter the vestry after each level) to see if that one has impact; once that one is at the same level as fa.ri.de.ta, try advancing both a bit until you gain the ritual. Then post your findings here as a comment/addition to the page. Good luck! LaoTzu 15:34, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

This ritual allows the priest to sacrifice a corpse to their god, restoring a nice amount of hp, up to 1000 hp or so. This ritual will turn a corpse to dust, returning these hp. A nice bonus of this ritual in the ability to get burial xp during combat.
Remembers a location to use in other rituals

__TOC__

Description
Performed upon a consecrated object, this ritual enables the object to remember the current location to enable you to request that your God return you there using the divine hand ritual at a later time. The Far Sight ritual can then be used on the item to see where it leads to and anything in that room, and the "meditate" command at your High Altar will give you a short, one-line, description of the remembered location.

The Remember Place ritual asks your deity to use a consecrated item to help you to remember a location so that you can refer to it later, when performing Divine Hand to ask for transport there. To perform it successfully, you will need a holy amulet.
Example
Provides a powerful defensive shield

__TOC__

Description
Probably the most used ritual by priests. This ritual covers the target in a protective layer of shielding which soaks up damage. It is effectively a complete covering of armour which weighs nothing. Unfortunately it is not very good against specials, but can soak up a large amount of base round damage at high bonuses. It can also be extended by "stacking". For example casting the ritual once leads to a 2 minute duration, casting it 4 times in a row stacks it to an 8 minute duration. The duration of a major shield after a single perform seems to be equal to you bonus, in seconds. (360 bonus -> 6 minutes). It can be extended with minor shield, however this will weaken the major shield and is not recommended. It's better to use the stacking method as mentioned.

You need a shield to perform the ritual. The origami paper shield at 1/9lb is currently the lightest, but there is a penalty from using it in that your major shield will be harder to perform, weaker in strength and shorter in duration. A mounted pewter shield is the next lightest and does not have the same penalty. A "proper" shield, although heavier in weight (about 4lb for the lightest) confers a significant ritual bonus, making the ritual easier, stronger and longer lasting.
Other than the effects mentioned here, the type of shield has no effect whatsoever on the ritual.

Each deity has a different appearance of major shield, coming in at least 2 types depending on the strength.
* Pishe: Blanket of fog
* Gufnork: Layer of fluff
* Gapp: Translucent cloth robe
* Sandelfon: Wall of dust
* Fish: Slimy seaweed cloak
* Hat: Translucent feather
* Sek: Crackling flames, Bright crimson flames

If you have a magical impact shield, that will always absorb hits first, with the major shield only having any effect after it has been destroyed.

Help File
<!-- If something in this "Help File" section needs changing, please also submit an in-game typo-rep, as this section should mirror the MUD's help file -->
Major Shield will place a protective shield around you that acts as a layer of armour against blows. It provides significantly more protection than the Minor Shield ritual. You'll need a holy symbol consecrated to your god and a shield to perform this ritual.

Example
> perform major shield on me
You speak a short prayer.
You call upon Fish to protect yourself.
You are protected by the power of Fish.
Basically raise dead, but works on pets which that have died, recently re-introduced into the game. Again a novelty/roleplaying ritual in my opinion. Just buy a new one, no-one will notice, honestly.
This ritual raises pets from the dead; yours or others'. Note that this ritual is performed either on the bereaved owner or on yourself, not on the corpse of the deceased pet. You will need a holy amulet, a holy symbol, and a prayer book with the prayer "Walking the Path" inscribed as well as a block of incense to trade for the life of the pet.
Munching Minions by Scouter
Every time someone says on (Priests) something along the lines of “don’t use totems or dust devils, they eat xp like mad!” I always wonder “how much is ‘like mad’?”.
Since this happens at least once an hour at times, the wondering was getting so annoying that I decided to Do Something About It.

Here follow the results of some (minor) testing. It’s based on fighting a single target, djelian farmers, and repeating this often enough to get a fair average.

The percentages are how much xp the minions ate compared to me fighting alone:

Minions !! Consumed
Totem || -1%
None || 0%
Whirlwind|| 14%
2 whirlwinds || 16%
Whirlwind, totem || 17%
Totem, spectre|| 31%
2 whirlwinds, 2 spectres, totem|| 42%
Spectre || 48%
2 Spectres || 64%

The results look a little odd at first sight, but repeated testing give the same result.

The oddness of the results (totem and spectre eating less then just a spectre, for example) seems to be the result of how the respective minions influence both death xp and bury xp.

Here follow the complete results:

Minions !! death xp !! !! bury xp !! !! total xp !! !! total eaten
2 whirlwinds, 2 spectres, totem|| 244|| 182.4%|| 569|| 44.8%|| 813|| 57.9%|| 42.1%

A little note on the procedures I used:

I gathered my team, and killed 5 farmers in the garlic fields surrounding Djelibeybi, one at a time. After this I would at least spend half an hour outside DJB, and kill at least 10 npcs outside DJB. This in a weak effort to stop the influence of repeated killing into the measurements. Every kind of team took out at least 2 of such groups of 5 farmers.
First I attacked, then immediately ordered my companions to attack as well.

Whether myself or one of my minions managed to do the deathblow had no influence on the results.

Detect Alignment by Garrion
Using the rituals Detect Alignment and See Alignment I (with help from many fellow Pishites) was able to come up with the following ranges.

Pishites see these figures as purple and golden drops when using the Detect Alignment ritual with purple being the Evil side of the scale and golden the Good.

Alignment Ranges
Alignment 		!! Range
Extremely Good 	|| 24 to 50?
Very Good 		|| 12 to 23
Quite Good 		|| 6 to 11
Good 			|| 3 to 5
Barely Good 		|| 2
Neutral || 0 and 1 of each colour
Barely Evil 		|| 2
Evil 			|| 3 to 5
Quite Evil 		|| 6 to 11
Very Evil 		|| 12 to 23
Extremely Evil 	|| 24 to 50?

I have been informed that there may be some variance in these results depending on skills and that there may be some overlap such as 1 being barely good and neutral. I am yet to see such overlap myself. As for skills, my bonus in faith.rituals.misc.target was 340 at the time of the testing.
Absorb by LaoTzu
<tt>

Description
----
With this ritual you can absorb the good or evil within a person leaving the opposite alignment behind in his body. The performing priest will have to face the Gods' wrath after assuming the target's misbehaviours. It requires a block of incense and a holy symbol.

Syntax
----
perform absorb (some|all) (good|evil) in <target>

Skills used
----

fa.ri.sp
fa.ri.mi.ta

What?
----
This ritual will basically trigger an alignment shift for the target.
When you change someone's alignment without consulting the Gods, you will of course have to suffer the consequences: the priest will experience a (smaller) alignment shift towards the alignment he absorbed and he will get struck by lightning after the ritual (a pure coincidence, obviously).
In Disc terms: the priest's alignment will change, and he will suffer damage.
The success/failure could be based on the fa.mi.ta bonus, while the amount of damage suffered would be based on the fa.ri.sp bonus (higher bonus, lower damage, of course).

To prevent abuse of this ritual, a player target would have to kneel down to the priest. (not npcs, otherwise you can't possibly test/experiment/tm with it)

Example of output:
> Hubby the Warrior kneels down.
perform absorb all evil in hubby
> You start to hum a low, vibrating chant whilst lighting the incense.
You cover Hubby the Warrior in smoke and put a hand on his head.
Slowly you feel evil, unfamiliar thoughts penetrating your mind and soul.
You say to Hubby the Warrior: "Arise and face the day a better man!".
Hubby the Warrior stands up.
A lightning bolt shoots down and hits you right on the head!
Is that muttering you hear?
Hp: 1381 (2567) Gp: 350 (417) Xp: 1245

Pro's and con's
----
The pro's for the target are obvious. For the priesthood, this ritual could add to our "social function". It would be another service we can provide.
The con's for the priest are quite clear too: an alignment shift could take the priest outside his ideal alignment. If the damage would be sufficiently high (say, 1500 hp damage for an "absorb all", with a low fa.ri.sp bonus) it would certainly make priest think twice before performing the ritual!

I don't think many priests would try to use this ritual to better their own alignment (it _would_ be possible though), because praying and burying are much easier and generally less dangerous.

I'd expect this ritual to be rather hard and lengthly to perform.

Extra's
----
If you don't feel like granting this ritual to every God, you could consider the following division:
* Pishe: only gets absorb (some|all) evil in <target>
* Sek: absorb (some|all) good in <target>
* Sandelfon: gets both options due to being the neutral God.

A second possibility would be to grant this ritual ONLY to High Priests and Ministers. It would add something to the positions, without making it overpowered, unbalanced or too important.
</tt>

Faithful denigration by LaoTzu
<tt>
Description
----
This ritual is so overwhelming and impressing that the focus of your attention will lose faith in his own powers, resulting in a gp drop. You will mutilate yourself in the process, hence you'll need a sharp, pointy dagger.

Syntax
----
perform faithful denigration on <target>
abort

Skills used
----
fa.ri.of (skill check against opponent)
fa.ri.of.ta (exchange rate gp/hp, initial skill check)
fa.ri.cu (for staunching the wounds)

What?
----
Being a servant of God is mostly about convincing others that you're right and they'll suffer if they don't believe you. With this ritual you'll demonstrate the power of your own belief to someone else, making them doubt their own strenght.
In Disc terms, the priest will sacrifice his own hp to make the target lose gp.

Firstly, the priest will call upon his God and cut himself in various places to demonstrate his strong belief. Then _if_ the target is impressed (check priest's fa.ri.of against target's overall faith), he will lose a bit of gp with every cut the priest makes.
As a hp to gp ratio, I'd suggest 5 to 8 hp for every gp, depending on the priest's fa.ri.sp bonus.

The priest will keep on cutting himself (and dying) until the target's faith gp runs out, or until the priest decides to "abort". Once the priest has stopped, he's try to staunch all his wounds (same skill check as "staunch bleeding" in holy sacrifice. fa.ri.cu?).

Possible output:
> A thin man is standing here.
perform faithful denigration on man
> You call upon Sek to grant you the strenght to demonstrate your mighty believe in the Seven-handed God.
You take on a dramatical pose and scream loudly as you raise your dagger.
You put your dagger to your cheek and make a deep incision.
Hp: 2289 (2500) Gp: 300 (417) Xp: 23890
The thin man looks slightly impressed.
You put your dagger to your left arm and make a long incision.
Hp: 2003 (2500) Gp: 306 (417) Xp: 23896
The thin man shuffles uncomfortably.
You put your dagger to your right thumb and stab it.
Hp: 1900 (2500) Gp: 312 (417) Xp: 23902
The thin man doesn't look too impressed about this.
> abort denigration
You put down your dagger and decide to stop showing off your belief.

A failed abortion: You try to focus on your severe blood loss, but you're too absorbed by your own display of faith.
A successful "sucking of gp": You put your dagger down contentedly as you notice that the thin man has lost every bit of confidence.

Pro's and con's
----
Needless to say this is a _very_ dangerous ritual. Probably even more dangerous than holy sacrifice, because you'll be tempted to suck every gp out of the target.
PKs will no doubt attack you as soon as you start performing this ritual.
I think this nicely balances out the fact that it's a powerful ritual.

Extra's
----
To further balance the ritual, it could trigger an auto-attack from npcs.
I think this ritual would be best suitable for Sek, since he's the most offensively oriented god.

</tt>

Holy wander by LaoTzu
<tt>
Description
----
When performing this ritual, you will be able to transcend your earthly being and wander around as a free mind for a limited amount of time. This ritual requires a set of prayer beads and a copy of the prayer "Visions of a better self".

Syntax
----
perform holy wander
wander <direction>
wander home

Skills used
----
fa.ri.mi.se to determine the success rate (bonus 360)
fa.ri.sp to determine the distance one can travel (nr. of rooms = (bonus - 200)/20)

What?
----
This could be described as a "scouting" ritual. You leave your body and scout your immediate surrounds for a while. It's not as useful as scrying, find or find corpse, but it sure beats stepping into the croc pit to see if the body is still down there!
Whilst wandering, your body would be left behind mindlessly, so it could be subject to any attack without you knowing it...

Example of output:
> perform holy wander
You concentrate on your mind and the emptiness around you.
You call upon Hat to assist you in freeing your mind.
As the Hand of Hat reaches into your head, you feel your mind getting sucked out!
<insert room description>
Minister LaoTzu is staring into space here.

You feel liberated and ready to wander.
>wander west
<room description>

>wander west
<room description>

You feel your mental link weakening.

>wander west
<room description>

Suddenly everything goes black as you seem to lose the strenght to wander on.
<Player unconscious because he wandered off to far or ran out of gp>
You groan as you regain consciousness.

"wander home" will take you back to your body, without side-effects.

I'd mainly see this ritual for three gods: Pishe (helping and ressing), Sandelfon (let the mind wander through the corridors) and Hat ("Hi! I'm your neightbour and I'm mentally visiting you!")

Pro's and con's
----
You'd be able to scout ahead, without endangering yourself too much. Also, you'd be able to spy on a nearby subject without being seen.
Wandering would cost 220 gp to perform the ritual, and drain 5 gp per heartbeat to maintain. This would leave the average priest enough time have a look around and explore the limitations of the ritual.
The fact that your body stays behind unprotected and passively is not to be neglected, especially not for PKs, or in more dangerous areas...
</tt>

Multi-priest res by Polleke
<tt>
Since multi-priest rituals seems to be the new thing to speculate about, I thought I might add to the madness by submitting this idea report.

The basic idea is to make the Pishite resurrect ritual optionally include other (non-pishite) priests. (I say optionally here, but there could be a split so there's 2 rits: the old one-priest res and the new multi-priest one -should someone decide to code it of course ;)- ).

So what could these other priests contribute to bringing someone back to life ? My answer is: spell and rituals (yes, res currently restores some rits, but I'll try to specify how I see it happening with this new version).

The way I think the ritual might work: the pishite initiates the ritual and every priest in the room gets an option to join and thus help perform the ritual. The pishite maintains control, so he/she decides when the ritual starts (so essentially they have control over who else can help perform).

And now the fun part: how would the bringing back spells/rits work :)
My idea is that different Gods would grant different spells/rits to be restored.
A rough guide could be:
Sek/Hat -> offensive rits/spells
Fish/sandelfon -> misc rits/spells
Gufnork/Gapp -> defensive rits/spells

You'll notice this doesn't mention what would happen if a second Pishite priest would participate in the rit. Options for this event could be:
- higher xp return to the target
- better chance of success
- healing included in the resurrection
- ...

Before cries of "OVERPOWARD!" are shouted, I'll try to address the balance issues as I see them.
- Too easy to get all your rits/spells back:
A solution for this could be twofold. You could limit the number of participating priests, so only 2 groups of rits/spells could be restored. And as a second measure the number of rits/spells restored should depend on the skills of the participating priests. (For example a check could determine the maximum mindspace the restored spells can occupy, then random spells are restored until this space is filled).

- Not fair that you get an xp return and rits/spells back:
To me this isn't an issue really, because I don't think it'll be easy to get the cooperation of the maximum number of priests.
Anyone who plays this game knows it's not always easy to get even one pishite to come resurrect you, so once you'll start asking for an extra sekkite, fishite, ... it won't become any easier to coordinate. So in this case I think the benefit is justified by the effort made.
</tt>

Fish's Big Voyage by Polleke
<tt>

Summary: Fishite ritual that can only be performed underwater (and only in a large enough room)
to summon a whale or other large seacreature that give the priest (and maybe his group) a lift to the surface.

Elaboration:
As a Fishite being stuck on the bottom of the ocean is only an inconvenience
(seeing as how you can perform breathe underwater to prevent drowning and allow you to passage out),
so this ritual would probably only be a toy rit. But it would be very in-character to get help
from seacreatures in getting to the surface. And what big animal would be more fun than a whale! :-)
You summon it, it winks, you hold on and it swims up with you. Maybe you could even convince it to swim around
on the surface so you could search for land with it.
(I can just see the whale pirate fleet of fishites forming if this ever makes it into the game :-D).
As said in the summary maybe it could also carry the whole group the fishite is part of (even bigger pirate fleets!).

Maybe a failure of the ritual could summon the wrong seacreature.
Options could be:
- a sardine (obviously too small to carry you to the surface)
- a stoned seaturtle, maybe accompanied by a clownfish ;-)
- a shark (which may or may not attack you, this would likely be insta-death for weaker priests if they are
anything like the sharks in tuna bay)
- a mermaid (or merman, in both cases the fishite would try to grab the wrong spot to hold on and the mermaid/man
would tailslap him/her)

So, in conclusion, please please consider coding this :-)
</tt>
Player-built golems by Pythium
<tt>

I would like to see player-created golems on the disc.
The following are my ideas on how golems could be created, controlled, and maintained.
Creating a golem would consist of two activities, making the actual physical shape of the golem, and writing the scroll. The creation of the physical shape would involve pottery skills: cr.pot.fo for the shaping of the golem, and then cr.pot.fi to complete the baking of the golem. It requires enough clay to form the golem, which first needs to be consecrated by the priest. Once the clay has been formed, it needs to be baked in a proper oven.
The second part of creation is to write the words to go into the golem's head. This would use the skill fa.it.sc to write. The scroll would contain information such as to whom the golem belongs, as well as which actions the golem can perform. These activities would be, for example, crafts commands, such as fix or leatherwork, or other commands such as judge or vurdere, or even covert commands such as steal, hide, plant. The bonuses in the skills used for these commands would be the average of the writing priest's bonus in the skill and the priest's bonus in fa.it.sc. The number of commands the priest can write on the chem is also decided by his bonus in fa.it.sc.
The golem can be instructed by its owner to pick up items, give items to its owner, and to perform the commands it knows. For example, the golem could be instructed to pick up a damaged weapon, fix it for its owner, and return it. The golem is by nature a pacifist, and will not fight, not if instructed to do so, nor when attacked itself. It will attempt to block all attacks made against it, but otherwise will not involve itself in combat.
Over time, the golem can sustain wear; should the golem be attacked and unable to block blows, it will damage sooner. To repair this damage, the golem must be given clay and be instructed to repair itself. The golem will not have a state of health, such as an npc, but rather a condition; should it sustain too much damage, the clay will shatter, and the golem be destroyed.
The golem would be unable to speak, however it could report using a slate, what would be told in the case of commands like judge, or vurdere, as well as notifying the owner if it was damaged.

Priests receive several guild specific commands. Only one faith related command, pray, is available to all worshipers.

Pray
This will channel some of, or all, your guild points to your deity, reminding Him of your existence and if you are out of alignment, moving you back into His favor with a satisfactory alignment for your god. How effective your prayer will be in this is determined by your skill in faith.rituals.special.
You'll find it easier to perform rituals right after you prayed. Whether praying has long-term effect on rituals or not, has not yet been established. To be eligible for election to the High Priesthood, you also need to have prayed in the last 10 days or so.

The following pray messages have been gathered by Milly, Emiko and Jeanie:

:<70gp
::You briefly bow your head and mutter a few quick words in praise of Pishe, Goddess of Slight Showers.
::Milly the milkmaid briefly bows her head and mutters something.
:70-120gp
::You spend a moment with your head bowed praising Pishe, Goddess of Slight Showers.
::Milly the milkmaid spends a moment in thought with her head bowed.
:120-190gp
::You lower yourself to your knees and silently offer up a short prayer to Pishe, Goddess of Slight Showers.
::Milly the milkmaid gets down on her knees and spends a short time in silence.
:190-270gp
::You quietly recite a lengthy hymn of praise to Pishe, Goddess of Slight Showers, while kneeling.
::Milly the milkmaid seems to spend some time talking to herself while kneeling.
:270-400gp
::You prostrate yourself on the ground and speak at some length to Pishe, Goddess of Slight Showers.
::Milly the milkmaid falls flat on her face and spends some time talking to the ground.
:400-551gp
::You prostrate yourself before the vision of Pishe, Goddess of Slight Showers, that appears before you and pray loudly and at great length.
::Milly the milkmaid prostrates herself and shouts praise to Pishe, Goddess of Slight Showers.

Burial commands
This will bury a corpse to the greater glory of your God. Like pray, this will move you into better standing with Him, and if you are out of alignment, it will bring you back towards your desired alignment. It costs 50gp (100 for some of the commands) to perform for each corpse, and how effective it is in changing alignment is determined by your faith.rituals.special. It is more effective in moving your alignment than pray (especially because you can perform multiple buries for the gp of one pray). The different gods get various commands, with other description, but basically they are all the same. You can not use this commands whilst in combat, and you need to be at least guild level 25 to learn this command.

Bestow
This command allows you to put a ritual onto a faith rod. For more info, visit the Faith rods page. Bestow is learned by "worship"ing your god at your high altar with a guild level of 75 or higher.

Scour
This command allows you to remove a ritual from a faith rod. For more info, visit the Faith rods page. Scour is learned by "worship"ing your god at your high altar with a guild level of 75 or higher.

Consecrate
This consecrates an item to your deity, so it can be used for things such as Remember Place and Divine Guard/Divine Sentinel. This has to be done at the High altar of your deity or at the small altar at the entrance of the TOSG (read the room description carefully, it’s not very visible), and you will also need to be within alignment. It takes 50gps to consecrate an item, and you need to have at least 150 bonus in faith.rituals.special to attempt this. The command itself is learned at guild level 50.

Obsecrate
High Priests have a special command called obsecrate. With this command they can ask the deity to alter various things about the way deity points are spent. You can get rough details on the current setup with the Devout Inquisition ritual.

The things they can currently do are:

*Reduce ritual costs - up to 30% of ritual costs can be set to be shouldered by the deity point pool.
*Increase ritual costs by taking tithes - rituals can be made to cost 30% more than usual, with some of the surplus being put back in the deity point pool. This is a more efficient way of converting gp to dp than praying.
*Make rituals easier and better - self-explanatory really, this can chew up a large amount of dp.

As usual, heretics are unaffected by all of this.
Summons a whirlwind to fight on your behalf.

__TOC__

Description
Performing this ritual causes a whirlwind to form, its composition depending on where it is summoned (There are at least 50 different types, ranging from leaves, to cat fur, to metal fragments, to pure faith, to the good old dust devils). After recent changes, the number of devils you can summon has been capped on two. Dust devils need to be "order"ed to engage in battle, otherwise they will just passively watch. In the same wave of changes to dust devils, the amount of xp they take from kills has been reduced, but it's still significant. Dust devils are unable to protect and mediocre at dealing damage, so their use is limitted. It has also been proven that fa.ri.of.ar and fa.ri.de.ar bear some relevance in the offensive and defensive capabilities of the devils. The progression of the sizes is:
Tiny, small, average, large, huge, gigantic, colossal, enormous, humungous, and unbelievably large.
This ritual summons a dust devil to follow your orders. It will attack if ordered, though not the servants of gods. It will not protect or defend the priest summoning it. A priest can only control two dust devils at a time. Performing this ritual requires use of a holy symbol consecrated to your deity.

Example
> perform dust devil
You find it more difficult to perform dust devil because you are a creator. However, this is mitigated by the fact that
you are a creator.
You raise your hands, and swirl them about.
You speak the holy word of Fish.
You summon a dust devil.
Use "order" to command it.
The wind picks up a bit and starts swirling. Dust and debris in the area come together to form an unbelievably large
whirlwind of leaves.

__TOC__

Description
This rather new ritual is in fact a very old one (that was removed for a while). When performed upon an item related to your God (party hat for Hat, anything for Fish, stylish clothes for Gapp, fluff for Gufnork, bodyparts for Sek, water for Pishe, rocks for Sandelfon), it transforms the item in a being (also depending on your god). Due to the recent changes to dust devils, this totem (together with spectres) is the only summoned creature that will protect the performer. Totems have horrible offensive skills but when shielded, they may be a useful protection for younger priests.
When performed upon an item of significance to your deity, it will summon a creature that protects you. The exact item and creature vary from god to god. To perform this ritual you will need a holy symbol, and you may only command one totem at a time.

Example
> perform totem on fluff
You chant the psalm of transformation.
__TOC__

Description
More of a fun based/role-playing ritual than anything else. Very useful if you spend a lot of your time at a certain bar in AM in the company of a certain High priest. This ritual cures people of drunkenness, and stops them getting a nasty hangover.
This ritual, when cast upon a person, removes the alcohol and its effects from a person. This can traumatise the target somewhat.

Ward Effect
When imbued as a ward, this ritual reverses itself and causes the thief to become drunk instead.
You close your eyes and contemplate higher things.
You utter a prayer to assist in mental regeneration.
You place your hands on yourself.
You feel a rush as the effects of the alcohol are purged from your body. You almost collapse from the shock.

This page contains an overview of all the joinable deities on Discworld. Each God has a short description stating his or her strong and weak point and which alignment they require. We will NOT give a rating to the different Gods. This is always subjective and we think you should make up you own mind, based on the alignment, the rituals granted or role-playing possibilities.

General Info
How to join the Priests Guild, can be found in the newbie section. But first you should carefully consider which God you want to serve. Do you feel like fighting? Maybe you want to help people? Fond of fine clothes? All these things might influence your choice.

To make the decision a little easier, here's a list of factors that might influence your choice of a Supreme Being to Worship.

God Related Bonuses
Each God provides the opportunity to get an bonus in performing rituals, under special circumstances. These are:
* Pishe: when it's raining
* Gapp: when wearing the right fashion ("<code>finger gapp</code>")
* Gufnork: when carrying fluff
* Sandelfon: when indoors
* Fish: when underwater
* Hat: when in the company of 4 other priests, or when at any high altar
* Sek: when in combat
* All Gods: shortly after having prayed or buried a corpse using the ritual bury command
* All Gods: when at your own high altar
* All Gods: when close to a temple of your God

Guild Point Usage, and Modifiers
Quiet recently, some priests have noticed a fluctuation in guild points used by rituals. Apparently some negative modifiers can increase the amount of guild points needed to perform a ritual. These modifiers are
* nearly out of alignment (You can barely feel the presence of ...)
* far from a temple of your God (You are far away from holy ground)
* a state of drunkenness or being poisoned
* performing a ritual from a faith rod

Specific God Information
* Pishe (as good as you can get - barely good)
* Gufnork (quite good - neutral)
* Gapp (quite good - neutral)
* Sandelfon (barely good - barely evil)
* Fish (neutral - evil)
* Hat (neutral - quite evil)
* Sek (barely evil - as evil as you can get)

Welcome to the Priests Guild. This is a little guide based on the most common questions that get asked (to do with the guild that is, not 'can you ward this?', 'can you res me?' or 'can you passage me?'). If you have a common question you get asked which isn't here, then give us a tell or a mail.

How do I join the Priests guild?
So, you've decided to join the Priests Guild. A most excellent choice...

Basically, first you need to worship a god. Which god(s) you can worship will depend on your alignment, you have to be in a Gods alignment before you can worship them. This will depend on whether you pulled a lever when you were in the alignment room of the newbie area, if you are set on a particular god you may have to completely restart (i.e. deleting this character and starting a new one) and pull the correct lever (though the levers give different degrees each time, so take notice), or spend a long time killing things with the alignment opposite to which you want.

Once you have decided which god to worship, you need to find their temple, either use an urchin, or take a look at the excellent discworld maps. Once in the temple, you must find the gods high altar, and pray to that deity. You have now become a worshipper of that god. To become a priest, you must find the worshippers area and 'join' the priests guild. Congratulations, you are now a priest of the deity of your choice! Time to advance skills, learn rituals and become a famous priest!

Can you give me any starting tips and info?
Your primary skills are those of the faith tree, though the fighting skill tree is important to many priests, if you want to advance at a reasonable pace.

As you advance your faith skills, you will get a number of rituals. To see what rituals you have, type 'rituals'. There is a help file for each of the rituals, simply type 'help <ritual>', e.g. 'help cure light wounds' and note you can also look up information on each of the rituals on the rituals page.

To use the rituals, you use the command 'perform', e.g. 'perform cure light wounds on me', for more help type 'syntax perform'. That is however fairly long to type so most priests use aliases for rituals, type 'help alias' for a detailed explanation on what they are, but as an example, typing 'alias cl perform cure light wounds on $*$' will set up an alias where if you type 'cl me' or ‘cl valkyr’ it will work the same as the example of performing the ritual. For more details and extra functionalities (such as standard arguments), read the helpfile.

How should I rearrange my stats?
This is not something to rush into quickly. Make sure you have read "help rearrange" and "help stats" before you attempt this, as well as asking other players from the same deity for advice. There is no such a thing as the best rearrange for a priest anymore. A rearrange for a Sekkite who wishes to go PK will strongly differ from a rearrange for a Pishite who only wishes to restore and resurrect people.

I would advice you to answer the following questions for yourself, before considering a rearrange:
* Which rituals do I want to be good at and what skills do they use? (For example, dust devil (*.area) and major shield (de.se) and maybe blight (of.ta))
* How important is fighting for me, and which fighting skills will I focus on? (Ex. Sword and parry; Mace and blokc; dagger and dodge)
* Do I have any other expectations? (Ex. I want a high perception bonus)
* Now that I have selected a couple of important skills, to what stats do they relate? (examine the skills-stats dependencies)

Now that you have determined which stats are most important for you, you should experiment on Acim’s bonus generator with some different rearranges (what happens if I move one point from dex to int?) and pick the one you like best.

There! You have now rearranged! Normally you are stuck with this rearrange for the rest of your character’s life. If you would happen to feel the need to make a minor adjustment (one stat point at a time), you should consider visiting Ralph in OC.

How do I advance my skills?
You can advance your skills in the worshipper area of your temple, also called the vestry. Type ‘info’, or ‘cost faith’ to see what you can advance in your primaries, what you currently have in those skills, and the experience cost to move up one level. You can also type 'cost faith to 50' for example, to see the xp cost of getting your overall faith to 50 from where you are now.

To advance, you can type 'advance faith' or you can advance the subskills by using 'advance faith.rituals.defensive.self', note that you can use the first two letters as a shortcut, ie 'advance fa.ri.de.se' or ‘advance fa.ri.de.se to 100’ or advance fa.ri.de.se by 10’.
You can also advance a little of the other skill trees, try typing 'cost fighting', 'cost other' and so on.

What should I advance?
To start with, you will need to advance overall faith (at least up to level 5, when you can advance faith.rituals, then you need 10 faith.rituals to be able to advance faith.rituals.defensive etc.) This can only be done up to level 50 however, at which point you have no choice but to advance the individual subskills shown in the list. In reality, no-one actually advances faith to 50, but you can better start advancing the subskills asap.

As to what particular skills you should advance after or even before this, my advice is to look at what rituals you can get on the gods page, or look on the rituals page to see which you would like to be able to use, then advance the subskill that the rituals you want use.

Note you should try and learn some fighting as quickly as possible, firstly the 10 levels available in the guild, then more off other players. The best practice is to take the fighting exercises in the newbie area. With any luck you can get your blunt, sharp, pierce, parry and dodge to level 5 without any cost!

How can I get money and experience, I can't even kill a cockroach!
Don't despair, these are super cockroaches, really, they are. But you must understand that the priests guild is not the most easy guild to start a character off in. We are one of the few unlucky guilds that have no primary skills capable of doing direct damage to an opponent, instead we have to rely on the non-primary fighting skills. The 10 levels of fighting you can learn in the priests guild are probably not going to be enough to start killing anything, you are going to need to learn more off another player. This is now fairly expensive to do, so you will need to earn some experience. Without fighting you can get experience by idling and performing rituals. Once you have learnt a bit of fighting (I would recommend to concentrate on one weapon type at first) then you will be able to go out and smite mightily, at this stage, the only rituals which will be a great deal of help to you will be cure light wounds, dust devil and minor shield. Now that you can get money and experience by killing things, you can go on your merry way, using this to learn more fighting to kill tougher things, or learning faith to get some of the more powerful rituals going (especially major shield).

Why does it say my god's attention is elsewhere?
Performing a ritual is an attempt to get your God to use some of His power to aid you in something. How convincing you are in your attempt to get your god to do this for you, depends on your bonus in the faith skills relevant to that particular ritual. If your god's attention is elsewhere, this means you did not have sufficient faith to convince your god to help you, and that His attention turned to other things (drinking, eating, plotting, …). You will need to increase your skills in the future in order to increase your chance to succeed your ritual.

Pray and the burial commands don't seem to do anything, what do they have to do with alignment?
Basically, they will move your alignment back into favor with your god, but how effective they are at it does depend on your faith.rituals.special bonus. Check the alignment section for more details.

What is a square stone/ivory statue/black medallion etc. and what does it do?
These are upgraded versions of the holy symbols which are used in some rituals and are readily available in the temple shops. Any ritual that requires a holy symbol to perform can be performed with one of these as a substitute. Each god has a different one, but you can use another god’s if you first consecrate it at your high altar, which can be handy so that you can wear your holy symbol by consecrating a black medallion (for Sek) instead of carrying it in your inventory. An other possible substitute, for every god, are charged prayer beads. They can replace a symbol, an amulet and a relic, all at the same time.
* Pishe: Small ivory statue
* Gufnork: Fluffy ball
* Gapp: Golden thimble
* Sandelfon: Square stone
* Fish: Ritual fishing rod
* Hat: Brass feather
* Sek: Black medallion

Minions !! Consumed
Totem || -1%
None || 0%
Whirlwind, totem || 17%
Totem, spectre|| 31%
2 whirlwinds, 2 spectres, totem|| 42%
Spectre || 48%
2 Spectres || 64%

The results look a little odd at first sight, but repeated testing give the same result.

The oddness of the results (totem and spectre eating less then just a spectre, for example) seems to be the result of how the respective minions influence both death xp and bury xp.

Here follow the complete results:

A little note on the procedures I used:

I gathered my team, and killed 5 farmers in the garlic fields surrounding Djelibeybi, one at a time. After this I would at least spend half an hour outside DJB, and kill at least 10 npcs outside DJB. This in a weak effort to stop the influence of repeated killing into the measurements. Every kind of team took out at least 2 of such groups of 5 farmers.
First I attacked, then immediately ordered my companions to attack as well.

Whether myself or one of my minions managed to do the deathblow had no influence on the results.
Absorb by LaoTzu
<tt>

Description
----
With this ritual you can absorb the good or evil within a person leaving the opposite alignment behind in his body.

* Sek: absorb (some|all) good in <target>
* Sandelfon: gets both options due to being the neutral God.

A second possibility would be to grant this ritual ONLY to High Priests and Ministers. It would add something to the positions, without making it overpowered, unbalanced or too important.
</tt>

Faithful denigration by LaoTzu
<tt>
Description
----
This ritual is so overwhelming and impressing that the focus of your attention will lose faith in his own powers, resulting in a gp drop. You will mutulate yourself in the process, hence you'll need a sharp, pointy dagger.

Syntax
----
perform faithful denigration on <target>
abort

Skills used
----
fa.ri.of (skill check against opponent)
fa.ri.of.ta (exchange rate gp/hp, initial skill check)
fa.ri.cu (for staunching the wounds)

What?
----
Being a servant of God is mostly about convincing others that you're right and they'll suffer if they don't believe you.

</tt>

Holy wander by LaoTzu
<tt>
Description
----
When performing this ritual, you will be able to transcend your earthly being and wander around as a free mind for a limited amount of time.

<insert room description>
Minister LaoTzu is staring into space here.

You feel liberated and ready to wander.
>wander west
<room description>

>wander west
<room description>

You feel your mental link weakening.

>wander west
<room description>

</tt>

Multi-priest res by Polleke
<tt>

Sek/Hat -> offensive rits/spells
Fish/sandelfon -> misc rits/spells
Gufnork/Gapp -> defensive rits/spells

</tt>

Fish's Big Voyage by Polleke
<tt>

So, in conclusion, please please consider coding this :-)
</tt>
Player-built golems by Pythium
<tt>

Minions !! Consumed
Totem || -1%
Totem, spectre|| 31%
2 whirlwinds, 2 spectres, totem|| 42%
Spectre || 48%
2 Spectres || 64%

Minions !! Consumed

The results look a little odd at first sight, but repeated testing give the same result.

The oddness of the results (totem and spectre eating less then just a spectre, for example) seems to be the result of how the respective minions influence both death xp and bury xp.

Nowadays performing experience can make a nice supplement to experience received from killing, and give newbie priests a nice amount of xp to invest into fighting.
The xp given appears to be 10 times the gp cost, and there does not seem to be any cap on the highest amount possible.
To try and prevent experience farming by performing the same ritual in a short period of time. It will reduce the experience gained from each perform. Use as much rituals as possible to get an optimal xp return (and a better chance of tm'ing!)
Praying also returns 10 times the gps used, but it doesn't seem to return less xp when used in sequence.

Some priests and other players team up in a group to benefit even more of this. <code>refer idlechasers</code> if you're interested in joining them.

Your guild level is determined by taking the average (rounded to the closest integer) of your 14 primary skills. Only the real, useful skills at the end of the tree, like fa.ri.de.se or fa.po, NOT fa.ri.of. In other words, you'll gain a GL every 14 levels in a skill. It is a common misunderstanding that your level in Faith is related to your GL. Let me explain the difference: your level in Faith is determined by your levels in fa.ri.de, fa.ri.mi, fa.ri.of and fa.po. Hence, fa.po has much more impact on your Faith level than any other subskill. This causes the difference between your GL and your Faith level.

Titles are used when someone uses the ‘who’ command in one of its forms, or using ‘refer laotzu’. They will appear after your name followed by the name of your god. For example: LaoTzu The Taoist the Prelate of Hat

Also available are pre-titles which go in front of your name. Besides the generic titles, available to players, every guild has its own special set of titles. As you advance in the guild, your religious instructor will provide you with special titles. These instances include amongst others: “Brother”, “Reverend”, "Blessed", "Venerable", and "Holy". Ministers and High Priests also find that their positions are available as pre titles.
Beware of consecrating prayer beads to another god if they are not newly acquired - any charge in them will be lost. Reconsecrating beads to the same god can be done (to remove a remember, for example).

Charging prayer beads
Newly bought beads are uncharged and can safely be consecrated to your god if none are available in your temple. Note that consecrating beads to another god once charged to any extent will remove any charge that has previously been instilled into the item, they can however be reconsecrated to the same god (to remove a remembered place, for example). The beads are charged when they are involved in any invocation or prayer - that is, every faith guild point spent while holding the beads is transferred through the beads and adds to its total charge. The beads can be used by anyone that worships the God that they have been consecrated to, whether they are charged by themselves or another.

The effects of charged beads are:

*An increase to wisdom of 2 when the beads are held after being charged to 'radiant'.
*An increase to wisdom of 1 when the beads are held after being charged to a little over 40% (Partway through 'bright').
*Acting as a substitute for holy symbols, holy amulets, and relics, whilst held or carried in your inventory.

The beads give off varying degrees of holy auras (which can only be observed by those of the faith) that give an indication as to the amount of guild points that have been instilled within them. The second part of the description is merely a coarser indicator of the same information, with two of the differing levels of auras to each. The beads do not lose charge when they are vaulted or placed in some container.

It is surrounded by a strong holy aura instilled by the numerous invocations it has been involved in.

Starting from as soon as the first guild points are instilled up to fully charged at 5 million guild points, the progression of auras is as follows:

*pale, flickering
*weakly flickering
*flickering
*unsteady
*faint
*pale
*weak
*steady (holy symbol replacement)
*strong
*bright (holy symbol and amulet replacement)
*vibrant
*radiant (symbol, amulet and relic replacement)
*brilliant
*dazzling
*blazing
*blinding

These holy auras are not evenly spaced in terms of guild points needed to obtain each successive aura, being more exponential in nature. The diagram below gives some idea as to the scale involved (The listed auras being at the start of their respective ranges).

(Diagram made by Warrax)

As a rough guide, at 4 guild point per heartbeat regen the process of charging to 'radiant' takes roughly 21 hours, depending on lag, if all guild points are instilled into the beads. At the more normal 3 guild point regen this figure is closer to 28 hours.
