From the wiki it looks like the beads will act as relic replacement when they are charged to +2 wisdom, but I've got a set that already works as relic while at the bright stage: 
In meditating over the set of prayer beads, you manage to gain some insight about it. It is consecrated to Seven-Handed Sek,
and remembering The High Altar of Sek for you. It is a holy relic of Sek, a holy symbol, a holy amulet and a set of prayer
beads. 
This is a string of prayer beads; twenty-seven perfect obsidian spheres threaded onto a blood-red cord. The surface of each
bead is etched with an intricate runic character, representing prayers and meditations dedicated to Sek.
None of the beads have been moved around the circle. 
The set of prayer beads beats regularly with blood-red pulses of light. 
It is surrounded by a bright holy aura instilled by the numerous invocations it has been involved in. 
Just beneath the surface, you can make out what looks like a pair of glittering eyes.

Something ain't right about it, my hatian priest alt had 80 levels of faith.rituals.defensive.target and didn't get the ritual..
So either the info is plain wrong to start with, I find that unlikly thou, it could be dated as the game changes all the time, or it could be right and there's a but in the game.. I belive that it's the most likly that option two is correct, so it would be nice if somone could figure out what level IS required to get the ritual. Sounds like you're the perfect person to do the research yourself! It's not that hard: try advancing fa.ri.de.se a bit further (one level at a time, leave and re-enter the vestry after each level) to see if that one has impact; once that one is at the same level as fa.ri.de.ta, try advancing both a bit until you gain the ritual. :Gufnork priest. Had .se at 105 and .ar at 60 learned when advancing .ta from 78 to 79. It appears that Major shield is learned at fa.ri.de.ta 79 and may also require fa.ri.de or fa.ri.de.se to be at a certain level

Example: I got fa.rit.def.tar to 79 and did not get taught the ritual, so I went out and raised my other two skills ( focusing on fa.rit.def.self mostly) until the base skill fa.rit.def hit 79 (fa.rit.def.se was in the low 90's at this time) and I was taught it.

This was tested by slowly gainging exp in the market of oc and running back to raise skills slowly and walking back and forth through the teachers door, so I'm fairly certain this is whats going on.

Summons a swarm of insects to protect you.

= Description =
Summons a swarm of insects which will assist you in combat, a more powerful version of dust devil. Also the victim of people screaming ‘Downgrade’, they no longer protect the priest in combat. Like dust devils or totems, they will not normally attack other priests, however they can be used against another Sekkite. If caught on the receiving end, the insects can cause temporary stat and skill losses with poison attacks.

What part of.ar plays is not known, it might make the creeping doom better at combat. Some of this skill is certainly needed to be able to summon the cloud.

= Help File =

This summons a swarm of flesh-eating insects to assist you in harming others. It will not protect you, but will attack your enemies for you. To perform this ritual, you need a holy symbol, a prayer book, and a relic consecrated to your deity. A priest can only control one swarm at a time.
