Sorekara: Superficial testing with my Hattian shows a bonus.

This page contains an overview of all the joinable deities on Discworld. Each God has a short description stating his or her strong and weak point and which alignment they require. We will NOT give a rating to the different Gods. This is always subjective and we think you should make up you own mind, based on the alignment, the rituals granted or role-playing possibilities.

General Info
How to join the Priests Guild, can be found in the newbie section. But first you should carefully consider which God you want to serve. Do you feel like fighting? Maybe you want to help people? Fond of fine clothes? All these things might influence your choice.

To make the decision a little easier, here's a list of factors that might influence your choice of a Supreme Being to Worship.

God Related Bonuses
Each God provides the opportunity to get an bonus in performing rituals, under special circumstances. These are:
* Pishe: when outside in the rain, snow, or sleet
* Gapp: when wearing enough (either three, or it varies) clothes of the right fashion ("<code>finger gapp</code>")
* Gufnork: when carrying 7 fluffy items, or in a fluffy enough room (passage room, or a room with enough fluffy things/flueves on the ground)
* Sandelfon: when indoors
* Fish: when in the water
* Hat: when in the company of 4 other priests, when at any high altar, or when inebriated.
* Sek: when in combat
* All Gods: shortly after having prayed or buried a corpse using the ritual bury command. Duration appears to be defined by Faith.Ritual.Special bonus.
* All Gods: when at your own high altar
* All Gods: when close to a temple of your God

Guild Point Usage, and Modifiers
Quite recently, some priests have noticed a fluctuation in guild points used by rituals. Apparently some negative modifiers can increase the amount of guild points needed to perform a ritual. They also increase the difficulty of the ritual, making it harder to perform and less effective if it does succeed. These modifiers are
* nearly out of alignment (You can barely feel the presence of ...)
* far from a temple of your God (You are far away from holy ground)
* a state of drunkenness or being poisoned
* performing a ritual from a faith rod
* at another deity's high altar (unless you're a Hattian)
* far from the eyes of any God (seems to apply at the Dysk, at witches and wizards guild areas, and in player shops or houses owned by witches and wizards)
* you sense that the gods have averted their eyes from this place (at the Witches' Guild in Bad Ass, seems to be a very large modifier <!--I actually failed a res, and it took 315 gp! D: -->)
* darkness ("quite dark here") for rituals that require the "sight" power, as described by the "meditate" command: cool, demoralise, detect alignment, detect magic, divine guard, divine sentinel, find corpse, haunting, holy sanctuary, raise dead pet, relief, see alignment, see consecration, warm
** Seems to have no effect on: agoraphobia, bless, chant, clarify, devout inquisition, divine hand, dust devil, endless halls, far sight, feedback, fumble, light, longsight, minor shield, major shield, parch, remember place, soothing rain, sotto voce, sparkling shelter, splash, tongues, totem
* <adjective> clothing is holy--only for mend. Applies when you're performing mend on an item of clothing that's currently in fashion.
* <adjective> clothing is an abomination unto Gapp--only for mend. Applies when you're performing mend on an item of clothing that's currently extremely out of fashion (presumably, the exact opposite of whatever's in fashion: if black clothing is in, white is out, but other colours give no message).
God-specific Rituals
Some gods will give their followers unique rituals that other priests won't get access to (until they can acquire a faith rod and a copy of the prayers needed, that is)

Thematic Variation
Each god will bestow upon you different versions of some shared rituals, as well as a different totem and burial command. How you interact with your chosen deity will also change depending on who your deity might be. For more information, see Thematic Variation.

Specific God Information
* Pishe (as good as you can get - barely good)
* Gufnork (quite good - neutral)
* Gapp (quite good - neutral)
* Sek (barely evil - as evil as you can get)

Places of interest
Each deity has high altars and shops in a different set of locations (though each have high altars in Ankh-Morpork, Djelibeybi, and the red tower in Bes Pelargic (on the far east side of town, a bit north off the river)). If you already know which deity you'd like to worship, this will affect which starting areas will be easiest for you.
*Ankh-Morpork: has the Temple of Small Gods and a high altar for every deity--most on the Street of Small Gods, the Pishe one in the Apothecary Gardens and the Fish one near the docks, just south of the river on the very west side of the city.
*Bes Pelargic: has high altars for every deity in the red tower--near the imperial palace, just north of the river on the very east side of the city. There's also a Fish high altar, shop and advancement room in the shipwreck in Tuna Bay. The wandering charm peddler on Garden Walk sells symbols, prayer books, beads, amulets, and relics (of, it seems, whichever deity you worship).
*Sto Lat: Has a high altar and instructor for Pishe in the park, somewhat hidden.
Relic Replacement
From the wiki it looks like the beads will act as relic replacement when they are charged to +2 wisdom, but I've got a set that already works as relic while at the bright stage:<br><br>
In meditating over the set of prayer beads, you manage to gain some insight about it. It is consecrated to Seven-Handed Sek,
and remembering The High Altar of Sek for you. It is a holy relic of Sek, a holy symbol, a holy amulet and a set of prayer
beads.<br><br>
This is a string of prayer beads; twenty-seven perfect obsidian spheres threaded onto a blood-red cord. The surface of each
bead is etched with an intricate runic character, representing prayers and meditations dedicated to Sek.
None of the beads have been moved around the circle.<br>
The set of prayer beads beats regularly with blood-red pulses of light.<br>
It is surrounded by a bright holy aura instilled by the numerous invocations it has been involved in.<br>
Just beneath the surface, you can make out what looks like a pair of glittering eyes.<br>
--Rigrig 16:26, 20 January 2010 (UTC)
I have a set that replaces a relic at a strong aura:

In meditating over the set of prayer beads, you manage to gain some insight about it. It is consecrated to Seven-Handed Sek. It is a holy relic of Sek.
(was unable to find anyone who could meditate on them for a better result)<br>
Marcus 21:23, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

:On a similar note: I started charging a new set of standard beads (through one consecration, then praying after that), and they started acting as a holy amulet replacement during the "pale" or "faint" stage (it was pale when I found that they replaced an amulet, but I hadn't checked since "faint", so it could have turned during either). They started acting as a symbol replacement a little later, still during "pale".

:Then I tried charging another set using only rituals, with the same result. (I started with a bunch of performances of Demoralise, which is only 10 gp.) So the replacement thing seems to depend on gp, not number of performances, and praying vs. doing rituals doesn't seem to make a difference.

I don't know about relic replacement, but I have a set of beads at pale that don't act as a symbol replacement. I don't know what happened, but maybe the exact requirements have changed? Sorekara 08:06, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

Transforms an item into a being. The resulting totem is a type of minion.

__TOC__

Description
This rather new ritual is in fact a very old one (that was removed for a while). When performed upon an item related to your God (see below), it transforms the item in a being (also depending on your god). Due to the recent changes to dust devils, this totem (together with spectres) is the only summoned creature that will protect the performer. Totems have horrible offensive skills but when shielded, they may be a useful protection for younger priests. A totem will not attack a priest, and will depart if it starts fighting a priest or if a priest starts fighting it. Totems granted are different from God to God.

The totem's alignment is the same as that of the priest who summoned it.

Totems can be referred to as "totem", "summon", "minion", "creature", or the specific type ("salamander", "lungfish", etc). The Sandelfon version--a rocky creature--can also be referred to as a troll.

Special features of individual totems
Sandelfon's totem is notable in that it has troll skin.

Hat's totem leaves behind a party hat when it departs, effectively making it an endless source of free party hats.

Pishe's totem will not attack.

Help File
<!-- If something in this "Help File" section needs changing, please also submit an in-game typo-rep, as this section should mirror the MUD's help file -->
When performed upon an item of significance to your deity, it will summon a creature that protects you. The exact item and creature vary from god to god. To perform this ritual you will need a holy symbol, and you may only command one totem at a time.

Example
> perform totem on fluff
You chant the psalm of transformation.
You call upon Gufnork to transform a huge ball of orchid fluff.
A dust bunny flashes into being.

Granted By
Pishe, Gufnork, Gapp, Sandelfon, Fish, Hat, Sek

Learnt At
25-30 faith.rituals.misc.area (Hat)

Skills Used
*faith.rituals.defensive.area Mocked
*faith.rituals.defensive.target Mocked

Base GP Cost
It costs 40 gp to summon a totem if you are not already controlling any minions, and an additional 20 gp for every minion you're controlling. So, summoning a totem when you have one dust devil will cost 60 gp.

Requirements
* Holy symbol and a god-specific item (not consumed):
** Wet Towel or Container with 1 pint of water* (Pishe)
** Fluff (Gufnork)
** Stylish clothes (Gapp)
** A rock/pebble/stone (Sandelfon)
** A fish? (Fish) (The wrong item will be "not fishy enough".) Items that work: stuffed haddock.
** Party hat or underwear (Hat)
** Body part (Sek)

* Pishe requirement details
* Wet towel -- will be dried, but will not be consumed. Items other than towels have not been tested but may work.
:* Performing splash on yourself while carrying or wearing a towel will get it wet enough for the ritual.
:* The lightest towels (at 5/9 lbs) are red beach towels, large black towels, frog green towels, blue hand towels, and yellow foot towels.
:* Patched floral towels are next at 1 1/9 lb, while fluffy pink towels and large white towels are 2 2/9 lbs each.
* Container with at least 1 pint of water. (Neither container nor water will be consumed.)
:* Blue water will work.
* Body part -- Human fingers weigh only 1/9 lb. (Although any creative Sekkite will undoubtedly find many more small body parts to cut off.)

Totems
The totems vary, depending on which god the priest is worshipping.
* For Pishe, it is a misty woman.
* For Gufnork, it is a dust bunny.
* For Gapp, it is an empty robe.
* For Sandelfon, it is a rocky creature.
* For Fish, it is a lungfish.
* For Hat, it is a vulture.
* For Sek, it is a salamander.

Pishite Asterisk
After further research I am modifying my asterisk on the water containing item to "May"

For further details I need to do more research.

However, there is no apparent change in the water level of a canteen repetively done totem on, however towel which totem is done on becomes dry. I will test some other ultra-cheap but unpractical containers (vials from the Alchemists guild, for instance.)

If someone has a poison container they could fill with several ounces of water to test, that would be useful.

I will also find some time to do further experimentation on volume of water needed, and with more measurable ammounts of water than 2 pints (the capacity of my canteen). I will also check differences between an open and closed canteen.

:I did the research and posted my results.
:I still need to do research on towel types. ----&quot;Ruedii&quot; 10:49, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

:OK I edited for more clarification and to make it easier to read. Could Fishites do some research into what types of Fish can be used? ----&quot;Ruedii&quot; 02:35, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

:Thanks to whoever added towel weight examples. If we get enough of those, we can add a page for towels. We may want to have some Gufnorkians, Fishites, and Hattites, Sandelfonians and Sekians do experiments on optimal and acceptable items of each class for their deity. Also, if a Pishite finds a towel that doesn't work and a wearable container that holds EXACTLY one pint, let us know. ----&quot;Ruedii&quot; 14:43, 25 December 2009 (UTC)
Results of performing Holy Insight on different totems. Purpose: to compare totems of different deities, and see if they get better with more skills (probably de.ar if any, but might as well record all potentially-related ones). I left out covert and magic because covert is irrelevant anyway and magic hasn't actually shown up.
