Priests receive several guild specific commands. Only one faith related command, pray, is available to all worshipers.

Pray

This will channel some, or all, of your guild points to your deity, reminding Him or Her of your existence, and if you are not at your deity's perfect alignment will move you towards it. How effective your prayer will be in doing this is determined by your skill in faith.rituals.special and the gp you spend.

If you are a priest, then the deity pool will get 1/10th of the gp spent, or 1/8th if you're at your high altar.

If you do not want to spend all your gp on a pray, the options and approximate proportion of your current gp are:

  • 20% gp - pray gently
  • 40% gp - pray lengthily
  • 60% gp - pray vigorously
  • 80% gp - pray fervently

You need to pray at least 50gp.

Praying to the wrong deity will leave you suffering your own deity's wrath for a time. You'll be unable to perform rituals and may have a loss of -1 to all stats. This effect seems to last fifteen minutes from the last time you did it (in other words, it doesn't stack if you do it multiple times, just renews). When it wears off, you get the message that "The higher being is no longer watching you."

You hear a booming voice resonating in your head.
Pishe, Goddess of Slight Showers tells you: Oh dear, an apostate, are you? I shall give
you some time to rethink your prayers to Sarduk.
You feel the attention of a higher being watching your every move.
You hear a booming voice resonating in your head.
Pishe, Goddess of Slight Showers tells you: You really, really, shouldn't have done that.
The higher being takes a renewed interest in your actions.
You hear a booming voice resonating in your head.
Pishe, Goddess of Slight Showers tells you: And I thought that you were one of my faithful.
The higher being takes a renewed interest in your actions.

There is another skill check involved with praying, which appears to use faith.rituals.special and the amount of gp you spend. Praying also seems to be harder the further you are from perfect alignment. If you fail this skill check, you will get a message about being distracted as you pray and will not receive the full amount of command xp you would otherwise. The effect on deity points and alignment shift is not known. As well as no extra message at all for a normal prayer, you may get "Your prayers come to your lips with ease" which signifies a better than usual prayer. The effect in practical terms is not known. An even better prayer is accompanied by "You clear your mind and focus on the glory of [your deity]". This has moved you into ideal alignment, and may have involved a much larger shift in alignment than you would normally get.

You'll find it easier to perform rituals right after you prayed. Whether praying has long-term effect on rituals or not, has not yet been established. To be eligible for election to the High Priesthood, you also need to have prayed in the last 10 days or so.

The following pray messages were originally gathered by Milly, Emiko and Jeanie, but the amounts of gp involved have since been changed. There also appears to be some other factor involved (likely faith.rituals.special), since it's possible for one person to have fewer gp than another person, yet consistently get a higher pray message when praying fully. Whether or not the deity pool is full can also affect what message you get--a full pray may (barely) get you a higher-level message when the pool is full, and a message one level lower when it's not. Therefore, the amounts of gp listed are merely examples and the ranges have some overlap.

52-63 gp
You briefly bow your head and mutter a few quick words in praise of Pishe, Goddess of Slight Showers.
Milly the milkmaid briefly bows her head and mutters something.
78-116 gp
You spend a moment with your head bowed praising Pishe, Goddess of Slight Showers.
Milly the milkmaid spends a moment in thought with her head bowed.
132-186 gp
You lower yourself to your knees and silently offer up a short prayer to Pishe, Goddess of Slight Showers.
You silently offer up a short prayer to Sandelfon, God of Corridors. [already kneeling]
Milly the milkmaid gets down on her knees and spends a short time in silence.
204-276 gp
You quietly recite a lengthy hymn of praise to Pishe, Goddess of Slight Showers, while kneeling.
Milly the milkmaid seems to spend some time talking to herself while kneeling.
304-388 gp
You prostrate yourself on the ground and speak at some length to Pishe, Goddess of Slight Showers.
Milly the milkmaid falls flat on her face and spends some time talking to the ground.
420-469 gp
You prostrate yourself before the vision of Pishe, Goddess of Slight Showers, that appears before you and pray loudly and at great length.
Milly the milkmaid prostrates herself and shouts praise to Pishe, Goddess of Slight Showers.
441-? gp
You kneel before a faint vision of Fish, God of Sea Creatures, which appears to you and utter a series of soft prayers.
You utter a series of soft prayers as a faint vision of Sandelfon, God of Corridors, appears to you. [already kneeling]
Inige Willows kneels and prays quietly for a few moments.
next:
You kneel as the image of Fish, God of Sea Creatures, appears in front of you, bowing your head and praying at length.
Inige Willows kneels and bows his head, reciting a lengthy prayer.
next:
You bow before the glowing figure of Fish, God of Sea Creatures, which appears in front of your eyes, speaking humble words of worship and praise.
Inige Willows bows slightly and mumbles a few soft words.
next
You stand before the radiant figure of Fish, God of Sea Creatures, which appears in front of you, praying softly.
Inige Willows looks distant for a moment as he mumbles a few soft words and a faint glow surrounds him.

Burial commands

This will bury a corpse to the greater glory of your God. Like pray, this will move you into better standing with Him, and if you are out of alignment, it will bring you back towards your desired alignment. It costs 50gp to perform for each corpse, and how effective it is in changing alignment (as well as how many corpses you can bury at a time) is determined by your faith.rituals.special. Faith.rituals.offensive.area is also used in some fashion for ritually burying during combat, as it's known to tm from that.

Multiple corpses can be buried at the same time in this fashion, including your own. However, other player corpses may only be buried if both the priest and the owner of the corpse are player killers.

It is more effective in moving your alignment than pray (especially because you can perform multiple buries for the gp of one pray). The different gods get various commands, with different descriptions, but basically the effect is the same.

You can use this command whilst in combat, but unless you are a Sekkite it will be harder and take longer. It takes longer for a Sekkite to ritual bury if they are not in combat at the time.

You need to be at least guild level 25 to learn this command.

The commands granted by each god are:

  • Pishe: ventisepelate
  • Gufnork: decompose
  • Gapp: shroud
  • Sandelfon: ventisepelate
  • Fish: pyroscipate
  • Hat: envalise
  • Sek: ensumpf

Bestow

This command allows you to put a ritual onto a faith rod. For more info, visit the Faith rods page. Bestow is learned at guild level 75 from your religious instructor.

Scour

This command allows you to remove a ritual from a faith rod, or a ward or remember place from an item. For more info, visit the Faith rods page. Scour is learned at guild level 75 from your religious instructor.

Consecrate

This consecrates an item to your deity, so it can be used for things such as Remember Place and Divine Guard/Divine Sentinel. This has to be done at the High altar of your deity or at the small altar at the entrance of the TOSG (read the room description carefully, it’s not very visible), and you will also need to be within alignment. It takes 50gps to consecrate an item, and you need to have at least 150 bonus in faith.rituals.special to attempt this. The command itself is learned at guild level 50.

You need to have prayed enough, and recently enough, to do this. This is what's going on when you get a result like this:

You begin to perform the ceremony of consecration.

You attempt to contact Gapp but His attention seems to be elsewhere.

A failure due to lack of skill, on the other hand, looks like this:

You begin to perform the ceremony of consecration.

You clear your mind and focus on the glory of Sek.
You attempt to consecrate the pair of baggy trousers but Sek seems to be far away.

Obsecrate

High Priests have a special command called obsecrate. With this command they can ask the deity to alter various things about the way deity points are spent. You can get rough details on the current setup with the Devout Inquisition ritual.

The things they can currently do are:

  • Reduce ritual costs - up to 30% of ritual costs can be set to be shouldered by the deity point pool.
  • Increase ritual costs by taking tithes - rituals can be made to cost 30% more than usual, with some of the surplus being put back in the deity point pool. An increase 10% on ritual costs equates to around 1% of gp being converting back into dp.
  • Make rituals easier and better - self-explanatory really, this can chew up a large amount of dp, with a scale of 0 to 10 being available. A setting of 1 means around 10% of the gp spent on a ritual will be used up in deity points.

As usual, heretics are unaffected by all of this.

Meditate

There are four different forms of meditation, aside from the version that just changes your position:

meditate
meditate {about|on} <ritual>
meditate {on|upon} obsecration
meditate {over|with|upon} <object>

The last three need to be done at a high altar of your specific deity.

Meditate

To just "meditate" at a high altar (any high altar, not just one of your own deity), with no modifiers, will cause you to forget all the rituals you know. (To learn them again, visit your religious instructor.)

Meditate on ritual

With this, you can gain insights about rituals that you know. It uses faith.rituals.special, faith.items.scroll, and the skill(s) the ritual itself uses.

A partial success will return correct information, just not complete information, and you'll see that you gained "some knowledge" instead of "some insights". Failure, on the other hand, either has no effect or means that you will immediately lose the ritual that you failed on and will have to visit your religious instructor again.

Here is a full example of the messages received when meditating on Bless:

> meditate on bless

You kneel by the large plinth and begin to meditate.
You think back to how you were trained to perform Bless.
You emerge from your meditative state with some insights. Bless is a miscellaneous ritual with two steps. It may be performed on other people and on yourself, and it consumes incense. It requires the power of speech and the ability to move, and the target will not resist it.

It seems that the "and the target will not resist it" message is the last line that will be shown on all targeted rituals and lines similar to the "It requires the power of speech and the ability to move" message are the last line for the non-targeted rituals. If there is a chance of the target being angered by your ritual, and you have sufficient meditation skill, you will also receive an addition to this last line saying "and the target will be angered by this ritual". Note that there is no message given if the target will not be angered.

Meditate upon obsecration

This version of meditate gives you information about your usage of the deity pool, as well as its state. It will also tell you if any rituals are considered profane by your deity (meaning that you can't use them from faith rods) or if any other deities are considered unholy by yours (meaning you can't use faith rods created by their priests). It is far more precise than Devout Inquisition as well as being usable by anyone. To use it, one must use the command "meditate on obsecration" at their god's high altar.

The result will be a set of figures detailing your use/contributions over the past few weeks.

This uses the faith.items.scroll skill. It costs 100 faith points, and requires a bonus of at least 160 to have even a tiny chance of success. When used, even by a follower, 5 deity points are added to the pool.

If another deity's rituals are banned, you'll see something like this:

  • You also learn that Sek is considered unholy and that none of their rituals will be tolerated.

If a specific ritual is banned, you'll see something like this:

  • You learn that holy couturequisition is considered profane by Gapp, God of Fine Clothing.

Meditate over object

You can also meditate over an object, which uses the faith.rituals.special skill and looks something like this:

>meditate over beads

You kneel by the bundle of sticks and begin to meditate upon the set of smooth aquamarine prayer beads.
In meditating over the set of smooth aquamarine prayer beads, you manage to gain some insight about it. It is consecrated to Pishe, Goddess of Slight Showers, and remembering the Warriors' Guild cafe for you. It is a holy relic of Pishe, a holy symbol, a holy amulet and a set of prayer beads.
