As your skills improve, your results will get more specific.  First, at a bonus of around 261 to 269 (varying depending on difficulty modifiers), you'll start getting directions like "north-northwest" instead of just north or northwest.  Next, at a bonus of around 335, you'll start getting a numeric description of the direction, like "27 degrees west from due north".  Finally(?), somewhere in the 413-418 range (with the ritual being "quite a bit easier" from being at a high altar), you'll start getting numeric descriptions of the distance, such as, "yanks you 7.2 inches in that direction."

Shows you the direction to a target.

Description

A substitute for the longsight ritual: instead of giving a glimpse of the room, the ritual causes the priest's holy amulet to point the way to the target, as well as giving an indication as to the distance from the target. In some instances, this can be more suitable than longsight, for example when out in the terrains, and unlike longsight it cannot be resisted.

The standard of information for direction and distance increases with skill, starting off with word descriptions (Your holy amulet sluggishly swings to the north-west) and progressing to numerical descriptions (Your holy amulet swings 35 west from due north and yanks you 24.3 inches in that direction).

If the target is hiding and you do not have enough perception that you would see them if you were in the same room as them, you cannot use this ritual. Increasing your perception via the watch command will help.

When used on an item remembering a place, it points the way to the remembered place.

Help File

The priest uses a holy amulet to determine the direction to a target. The amulet will swing in the approximate direction of the target, tugging with varying strengths, depending on the distance to that target.

Example

> perform find on vy
You utter a quick prayer.
You hold up your set of sapphire prayer beads.
Your set of sapphire prayer beads rapidly swings due west.

Messages

As your skills improve, your results will get more specific. First, at a bonus of around 261 to 269 (varying depending on difficulty modifiers), you'll start getting directions like "north-northwest" instead of just north or northwest. Next, at a bonus of around 335, you'll start getting a numeric description of the direction, like "27 degrees west from due north". Finally(?), somewhere in the 413-418 range, you'll start getting numeric descriptions of the distance, such as, "yanks you 7.2 inches in that direction."

Non-numeric messages

The non-numeric distance messages appear to be exactly the same as for Find Corpse.

Numeric messages

For distance, the number of inches increases the further away you are. The scale appears to be linear, with .1 inches for every ten miles. (Note: you don't get these until around the "steadily" or "ponderously" range. Up until then you get the textual messages.)

Some examples for distance:

  • 0.1 inches: one journey east from AM to the Drum
  • 0.3 inches: Sto Lat marketplace to the Drum
  • 0.6 inches: Sto Helit to AM
  • 1.2 inches: Sheepridge to AM
  • 1.3 inches: Dinky to AM
  • 2.0 inches: Scrogden to AM
  • 2.5 inches: Bleak Prospect to AM
  • 3.4 inches: Hillshire to AM
  • 3.6 inches: Pekan Ford to AM
  • 5.4 inches: DJB to AM
  • 6.8 inches: Gloomy Forest to AM
  • 7.2 inches: Ohulan Cutash to AM
  • 7.5 inches: Mad Stoat to AM
  • 7.5 inches: Lancre Town to AM
  • 7.6 inches: Bad Ass to AM
  • 7.6 inches: Brass Neck to AM
  • 7.6 inches: Creel Springs to AM
  • 7.6 inches: Blackglass to AM
  • 7.8 inches: Razorback to AM
  • 7.8 inches: Mad Wolf to AM <--!6 degrees south from due west-->
  • 7.9 inches: Slice to AM
  • 8.2 inches: Escrow to Lancre Town
  • 8.5 inches: Land of the Giants to AM
  • 11.1 inches: Escrow to AM
  • 24.6 inches: Genua to AM
  • 34.4 inches: BP to AM
  • 46.4 inches: Genua to BP

Failure messages

There are several failure messages, which mean different things.

Your holy amulet goes cold to the touch for a moment.

This means that the ritual failed because there are multiple possible targets. For example, this fails if you perform find on "beggar", because there are a lot of beggars.

Your holy amulet swings wildly in every direction.

This means that you are, or the target is, in a room where Find doesn't work. For example, you'll get this message if you perform it while in your passage room.

Your holy amulet warms, but doesn't move.

This means that find doesn't work on the target. Some quest npcs have this property.

You cannot find a target for this ritual.

This means that the target is hiding and you don't have enough perception to see them. (In this case, you don't actually perform the ritual.)
