'''Note''': This page describes the ''old'' supplication process, pre-[http://discworld.atuin.net/lpc/blog/blog.c?action=filter&blog=recent%20developments&id=419 February 24, 2012]. It is kept here purely for historical interest.

Thanks to a fairly new concept (depending on when you read this), it is now possible to abandon your god and worship another god instead. This is a slow and intensive process, in order to avoid that people will hop from one god to another whenever they are tired of their rituals. Below is the official description of the procedure you have to follow, as it was developed by our loved creator Elera.
* The worshipper must first renounce their faith, with 'renounce faith' at a high altar.
* The supplicant must 'supplicate' at the appropriate altar to begin the supplication process.
* The supplicant must supplicate at the appropriate altar at least once every 2 hours spent online.
* The supplicant must be in the proper alignment when supplicating.
* The supplicant must supplicate a minimum of 60 times.
* A minimum of 30 round world days must elapse between the time of initial or restarted supplication and the time at which the supplicant becomes a member of the church.
* A minimum of 5 days of online time must elapse before becoming a member of the church.

If the supplicant takes too long between supplications, the process will start over from the beginning. If the supplicant wishes to cease
supplicating a deity, 'renounce faith' will allow them to do so. Once a person leaves a church, they can only rejoin that church or another via supplication. Initial choosing of a deity will be the same as always. Though you can supplicate more frequently than every two hours without penalty, it is not rewarded in any manner, so spamming is not profitable.

These details are covered in the help file for the high altars. You can read it with 'help altar' in the room with one. If your altar has a different name (plinth, stone, etc), you will need to use 'help plinth' etc.
Just my thoughts about changing Gods. :)

I was quite surprised after returning to the MUD from a holiday to find the rituals for the Gods had been changed. Even so, I was initially pleased about the changes because I have always thought a bit more diversity and variety in the priest rituals granted to followers would be a good thing.

However, I was not particularly happy with the rituals Gapp's followers were granted (mend and cool) so I decided to renounce the path of fashionable clothing and become a fluff worshipper in the hope of eventually re-learning cure light wounds, a ritual that has served me well for a long time. Summon fluff sounded pretty funky as well, so I started supplicating Gufnork... And supplicating... And supplicating... Even now, nearly a month into the supplication process, I am only halfway to achieving my goal.

For what it's worth, I think the supplication process is a bit too restrictive. I can't venture far away from Gufnork's temples because of the ever-present fear of having to restart the entire process if I am a minute late with my supplication. I have delayed exploring Genua because there is no access to a temple of Gufnork there... I did manage to portal myself there once but after an hour and a half exploring the Mano Rossa headquarters I had to rush back to Ankh-Morpork.

The changes have affected my gameplay adversely in some ways. I love wandering around exploring new (and old) areas whilst keeping a sharp eye out for any contracts in the books. However in the month or so I have been back on the Disc I have spent most of my time running around the terrains close to Ankh-Morpork or idling in the city itself. This gets a tad boring after a while. It hasn't ruined my experience of the Disc (no Droves for the foreseeable future) but it has dampened my enthusiasm for logging into the MUD slightly because I know I'll just end up doing the same old thing.

I can understand the in-game need to make the process of changing Gods quite difficult, but at the same time looking at the supplication process from the perspective of the books I can't see the Gods being quite so reluctant to accept new followers. If anything, surely they would embrace converts, as the Gods derive their power from their worshippers. The Discworld Gods may be jealous but they also seem to be quite greedy and power-hungry... If Gufnork will accept a complete newbie into his service instantly then why should He be so strongly opposed to accepting experienced players into the fold when such players can only increase His power and influence? And quite possibly attract other converts into the bargain.

I do agree with the need for a supplication process but the difficulty of the current process is a bit too much for my liking. Perhaps increasing the time limit to every three or four hours (which still entails supplication at least twice every Discworld day) or altering the penalty for being late to losing a day from the supplication process instead of starting from scratch would make it less of a drag.

Cheers,

Zeus the Swift Assassin of Raven House.

---------------------------------------

Supplicating is tedious and ruins your gameplay totally. It needs to be made a lot easier. - Iatemycat

Ilde: For posterity

== Maximum Restored Xp for the Subject ==

The subject of the ritual will receive back a maximum of 75% of their before-death Xp, depending on a skillcheck that seems to compare the curing target bonus of the priest with the before-death Xp of the subject. The scaling factors and linearity or otherwise of the skillcheck are unknown, but it seems that 500 bonus in curing target will generally give the maximum return to the subject for resurrections involving up to at least 10 million death Xp. Data for higher death Xp resurrects is somewhat sparse.

Xp awarded to the deceased after death as a result of group actions, heartbeat, exploration etc is apparently not subject to these calculations and is instead returned 100% on resurrect or raise.

== Maximum Reward Xp for the Performer ==

It seems that the performer will receive a maximum from the resurrect of the ((Death_Xp * 0.75) ^ 0.8) * 0.75, in addition to the ritual command Xp of 4050 (maximum) and approximately 105 heartbeat Xp during the performance of the ritual.

Lower bonuses may slow the ritual and increase the heartbeat Xp. Repeated and frequent performances of the ritual may reduce the command Xp. Neither of these factors affect the Xp return to the subject, but they may affect the Xp reward to the performer.

== The "Degrees of Success" ==

Both of these skillchecks appear to involve a "degree of success" calculation rather than the more common "pass or fail" one.

The table below shows observed and calculated Xp returns for the resurrectee and the resurrector, based on a resurrector with a faith.rit.cu.ta bonus of 516. Two relations have also been presented graphically, these are the subject's Xp return vs their death Xp, and the performer's Xp reward, also against the subject's death Xp.

XpPishe in the table is the performer's Xp increase after 4155 Xp has been subtracted for command Xp and heartbeat xp performing the ritual. Note that some subjects reported approximate values for one or both of their pre-death and post-resurrect Xp amounts.

Thanks to Scouter who determined the basic form of the correlation between the subject's death Xp and the performer's Xp gain, which has been refined to determine the best fit correlation from several possibilities. Empirically, the form "Xp2 = Xp1 ^ 0.8" matches the teaching Xp equation, and a 0.75 multiplier is used elsewhere in the subject's xp return from resurrect, thus it is felt that the appearance of these terms in an equation that closely correlates to observed values is significant.

It is now believed (by Zexium) that following the calculation of the two maximum values, each is multiplied by a value between 0.00 and 1.00 (inclusive) that is determined by how well the performer of the ritual passes skillchecks of their faith.ritual.curing.target skill against values determined from the Xp amounts involved. It is also believed (by Zexium) that that the values used for the skillcheck are calculated in such a way that the skillcheck for the performer's reward Xp is always harder for a given resurrection than the skillcheck for the subject's Xp return.

<table border="1">
Note the drop in resurrector Xp for the three higher-Xp resurrects in the above table, this suggest that the resurrecting priest in this case reached the limit of their abilities in the "resurrector" xp return at around 3.2 million death Xp. It is postulated that further research would show further step drops in the Xp return to the resurrector at higher death Xp values.

Special thanks goes to Laule for the forty plus resses, and for messing up his alignment for the research. :) And thanks also go to Baralai, Carasel, FraLipoLipi, Hurry, Nisphozous, and Vogue for resses, to Serakyo and Uheel for donating some data from their own resses, and to Chare, Vogue and Zph for dying for science.

This is an attempt at determining the relationships between cu.ta bonus, ritual modifiers, xp returned to the ghost, and xp awarded to the resser from the [[Resurrect]] ritual.

===Main table of res data===
Where xp returned is bolded, it's the precise amount (to within a few xp)--in other words, leaving out all xp received while dead. (Using a health bar plugin and making sure it's updating constantly during the res makes it fairly easy to see this.) Likewise, when res xp is bolded, ''it's'' the precise amount and doesn't include any command xp or heartbeat xp. Non-bolded amounts for both of those still have an attempt at not including command/heartbeat xp, but they may be off.

The "visible modifiers" in question are the ones you see when you perform the ritual--the message that goes, "You are finding it somewhat more difficult to perform resurrect because you can barely feel the presence of Pishe." and so on.

It's worth noting that the modifiers you ''start'' performing the ritual with seem to be the important ones--if it stops raining partway through the ritual, you still get the bonus.

All resurrectors are Pishite priests, unless otherwise noted. (Likewise, numeric alignments are degrees good unless otherwise noted.)
===Xp return===
*Xp return (as a percentage) seems to depend purely on bonus and modifiers, not amount of xp the person died with, as a 450 bonus with no visible modifiers gets a 70% return on amounts from just over 26k, up to 30 million (the maximum xp someone can have).
*A 458 bonus is enough to get the maximum return ''if'' a few ritual bonuses (high altar, ''and'' rain, ''and'' recently prayed) are applied.
*A 476 bonus is enough to get the maximum return with one ritual bonus (being in the rain).
*A 516 bonus is enough to get the maximum return even far from a high altar.

===Pishite's xp===
Res xp seems to be affected by the performer's xp rate, possibly in a similar manner to burial xp. Aside from this, the formula that res xp equals ((xp returned to ghost) ^ .78) fits well.

====Res xp tables====
This is a table of resses where ''both'' xp returned and the priest's res xp were fairly precisely known, and where the priest's xp rate wasn't high enough for there to be a penalty to res xp. (Alternatively, where 1)at least one of those was precisely know, 2)the slightly imprecise figure was enough xp that even an error of a few hundred would amount to less than a tenth of a percent, and the xp could be calculated to within a few hundred, and 3)the priest's xp rate wasn't high enough for a penalty. These have the "slightly doubtful" thing italicized.) I've separated out these data points as being the best to work from.

The last column is the log of the priest's res xp, in the base of (xp returned). In other words, the xp returned raised to the power of the number in that column equals the priest's res xp. This is rounded to three decimal places.
This next table is a table of ''all'' the resses that there is xp return and res xp data for. The data from Zexium's research [[Resurrect#The_.22Degrees_of_Success.22|here]] is included (these rows have a light grey background). Note that for these, I've used the (death xp * .75) number for the xp returned, on the assumptions that 1)a 75% return is indeed the maximum, 2)the resurrector would have gotten the maximum return (which should be the case with a 516 bonus), and 3)reported amounts of xp after being ressed may have included unknown amounts of heartbeat xp or shared xp from groupmates, accounting for the fact that most of those numbers are significantly higher than 75% of the reported death xp.

Rows where the resurrecting priest was known to have a high xp rate ("high" in this case means "definitely over at least 400k/hour") have a light blue background.

The sixteen light green rows are the ones I took from Serakyo's res data. As there was a very large amount of data, I (fairly arbitrarily) took the ones involving over 3 million death xp and which did not have a suspiciously round number for the death xp (as the odds of dying with an amount of xp that's ''exactly'' evenly divisible by 1000, 10000, or even 1000000, are very small, I took the liberty of assuming that the person being ressed was giving an estimate or had rounded in those cases). For all except one of them, instead of the reported post-res xp, I used death xp * .75, for the same reasons as in the res xp vs xp rate table below. (For the remaining one--the 3731937 res--the post res xp was ''less'' than 75% of the death xp, so I used the post res xp there.)

The final six columns present three different possible formulae for the priest's xp return, and the difference between that and the reported return.
*The first formula is: res xp = (xp returned)^.78
*The second formula is: res xp = ((death xp * 0.75) ^ 0.8 ) * 0.75. This is the one Zexium came up with.
*The third formula is: res xp = ((xp returned) ^ 0.8 ) * 0.75. This is a variation on the one Zexium came up with, where (death xp * 0.75) is replaced with (xp returned). For bonuses at or past the cap, they should be the same.

All are truncated to the nearest xp.

Note: for means and medians, the absolute difference was used (to avoid having large negative differences balance out large positive differences).

Including ''all'' the resses...
*The difference between the first formula's predicted res xp (xp returned ^ .78) and the reported res xp varies between -30876 and 138236 xp. The mean difference is 3277. The median difference is 232.
*For the second formula (Zexium's), the difference varies between -25601 and 153092 xp. The mean difference is 5994. The median difference is 968.
*For the third (Zexium's, modified), the difference varies between -30036 and 149644 xp. The mean difference is 4338. The median difference is 523.

Leaving out the known "high xp rate" resses (the blue ones), since the apparent penalty to res xp after a certain xp rate makes those the worst for this purpose...
*For the first formula, the difference varies between -30876 and 30876 xp. The mean difference is 618. The median difference is 68.
*For the second formula, the difference varies between -25601 and 56829 xp. The mean difference is 3168. The median difference is 737.
*For the third, the difference varies between -30036 and 30036 xp. The mean difference is 1638. The median difference is 394.

There was one anomalous data point: the 3,731,937 res. That one showed the resurrector apparently getting about 30,876 ''more'' than the predicted amount. This can't be accounted for by extra heartbeat or command xp. A combination of getting a moderate achievement (for 35k) during the resurrection (or between checking xp before and after, anyway--possible candidates for such an achievement are Bane of Pain (if xp was checked after healing), Random Tour Guide, We Must Stop Meeting Like This, or Fear to Tread), and the reported post-res xp including a large chunk of xp (it would have to be over 100k) gained while dead could explain it, though. This is, however, pure speculation.

The first formula therefore fits the observed data the best--it's the most successful at predicting res xp, with the lowest average (absolute) difference between the predicted value and the reported value, and the smallest range of differences.

====Res xp vs xp rate====
This is a table of resses where the priest's xp rate (''before'' the res) was known (precisely or not). More precise xp return and res xp are bolded.

When a range, or less than/greater than a certain amount is given, it means the xp rate was deduced (from timing of numberchasing achievements being achieved, and/or from the resses being part of a set of many in a row, such that the least the priest's xp rate could have been was the sum of the res xp from all the resses in the last hour). Otherwise it was taken from the achievement progress in Good Day shortly beforehand.

The four light green rows are from Serakyo's data. The "xp returned" column for those is just 75% of the death xp, since he can get the cap and since the xp that was reported was just "post res xp" and included unknown amounts of heartbeat xp, shared xp from groupmates, etc. Res xp was expressed as before-and-after xp, from which I subtracted 4150 (guessed command + heartbeat). Xp rate was figured from the timestamps of the resses and his reported xp before and after--no resses were precisely an hour apart, so these are all approximate--especially the 44550 res, because the rate was only over the last thirteen minutes.
