Shows you the direction to a target.

Description

A substitute for the longsight ritual: instead of giving a glimpse of the room, the ritual causes the priest's holy amulet to point the way to the target, as well as giving an indication as to the distance from the target. In some instances, this can be more suitable than longsight, for example when out in the terrains, and unlike longsight it cannot be resisted.

The standard of information for direction and distance increases with skill, starting off with word descriptions (Your holy amulet sluggishly swings to the north-west) and progressing to numerical descriptions (Your holy amulet swings 35 west from due north and yanks you 24.3 inches in that direction).

If the target is hiding and you do not have enough perception that you would see them if you were in the same room as them, you cannot use this ritual. Increasing your perception via the watch command will help.

When used on an item remembering a place, it points the way to the remembered place.

Help File

The priest uses a holy amulet to determine the direction to a target. The amulet will swing in the approximate direction of the target, tugging with varying strengths, depending on the distance to that target.

Example

> perform find on vy
You utter a quick prayer.
You hold up your set of sapphire prayer beads.
Your set of sapphire prayer beads rapidly swings due west.

Messages

As your faith.rituals.misc.target bonus improves, your results will get more specific.

Direction messages

At first, the direction will be specified as one of eight: north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west, northwest.

Next, around a bonus of 261 to 269, the directions you get will start getting more precise: in addition to the original directions, you'll also get north-northwest, south-southwest, and so on.

Finally, at a bonus of somewhere around 335, you'll get a numeric description of the direction, such as, "27 degrees west from due north". You can also get descriptions like "marginally south from due east", which appear to mean less than a degree off of a due direction.

Distance messages

At first you'll get textual descriptions of the distance to the target; these give way to numeric descriptions at bonuses of around 405 (at a high altar and having prayed), 406 (near holy ground and having prayed), 407 (at a high altar, or recently prayed and special bonus), or 408 (near holy ground or recently prayed).

With the numeric descriptions, the number of inches specified increases the further away you are. The scale appears to be linear, with .1 inches for every ten miles. (Note: you don't get these until around the "steadily" or "ponderously" range. Up until then you still get the textual messages.)

Failure and other messages

There are several failure messages, which mean different things.

Your holy amulet goes cold to the touch for a moment.

This means that the ritual failed because there are multiple possible targets. For example, this fails if you perform find on "beggar", because there are a lot of beggars. It can also mean that the target is not loaded.

Your holy amulet swings wildly in every direction.

This means that you are, or the target is, in a room where Find doesn't work. For example, you'll get this message if you perform it while in your passage room.

Your holy amulet warms, but doesn't move.

This means that find doesn't work on the target. The witch spell Banishing of Prying Eyes is one possible cause of this, and some quest npcs have this property, as well.

You cannot find a target for this ritual.

This means that the target is hiding and you don't have enough perception to see them. (In this case, you don't actually perform the ritual.)

Your set of smooth aquamarine prayer beads dangles, twitching gently.

This seems to mean that the target is in a stasis sphere in the same room as you.

Your set of smooth aquamarine prayer beads hangs perfectly still.

This means that the target is in the room with you.
